Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I was a student of Gil's in the late 80s. His friendship and inspiration set me on the course of pursuing an academic career as well. On my regular trips back to Winnipeg I looked forward to and greatly enjoyed a long visit with Gil, talking about life, science, and politics for hours. He was a true mentsch and I will miss him greatly. My deepest condolences to his children and grandchildren. Baruch dayan ha'emes - Posted by: Stacey Cherny (former student) on: Oct 31, 2012

  • Along with many other of Gil's former students who went on to university careers, I still teach research methods to today's crop of student's using Gil's uniquely famed 0-1-k rule (...don't ask, unless you are ready for one of Gil's equally famed long stories!). He will be missed but not forgotten. - Posted by: James Enns, Professor UBC Psychology (former student) on: Oct 01, 2012

  • Gil's colleagues in U of W's Department of Psychology were saddened to hear of his death. Gil was a long-time member of the department, who continued to be productive even well into retirement. Many students were greatly influenced by Gil over his years in Psychology, a number of whom went on to distinguished careers of their own. Our sympathies go out to members of Gil's family. They can rest assured that Gil's influence will continue long into the future through his many publications and lasting effects on generations of students. - Posted by: Jim Clark (Colleague and Chair of Psychology) on: Sep 29, 2012

  • I took Professor Becker's first year Psych course. He was just so laid back. Just a really nice fella. He will be missed. - Posted by: Sidney (Student at U of W.) on: Sep 28, 2012

  • To the family: Very sad to learn of Gil's passing. Gil and I enjoyed a very good relationship during our years at the university. For quite a spell we had adjoining offices so we had lots of gabfests. He had a great sense of humour, and we 'joshed' each other quite frequently. My wife Irene and I offer our sincere condolences to all family members. - Posted by: Gerald(Gerry) & Irene McVay (Former colleague at UofW) on: Sep 28, 2012
