BARBARA J. COGHLAN January 21, 1953 - September 26, 2012 With her family by her side, Barb passed away on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care Unit. During her short battle, Barb was always surrounded by her loving family and friends. Barb will be sadly missed by her loving husband George Stevens and precious children Jeffrey (Jordan) and Jill; father Norman Coghlan (Pearl McGonigal); sister Gail, brother Rob (Sandi) and stepsister Kim; sister-in-law Louise (Larry); brothers-in-law Terry (Carrie) and Grant (Annette); nieces and nephews Natalie, Cailey, Billy, Braedon, Emma, Matthew and Jarett. Barb was predeceased by her mother Eleanor Coghlan and in-laws Doris and George Stevens. Barb was born in Winnipeg and spent her entire life in Fort Garry, where she created many friendships and memories. She attended Oakenwald Elementary, Viscount Alexander and Vincent Massey Collegiate. Barb and George raised their family in Wildwood Park and enjoyed its natural settings. Barb always enjoyed being outdoors and many family vacations were spent camping in a tent. She loved the simplicity of camping and the precious time spent with her family. Travel was also an important part of Barb's life; she shared the love of travel with George, Jeffrey and Jill. She always had a new trip picked out for the family from one of her travel magazines. Some other favourite trips included Hawaii with her parents, backpacking in Europe and a girls' trip to West Virginia. Barb also enjoyed walking, biking and spending time at Lake of the Woods. In 1959, Barb's father Norman established Coghlan's Limited. Together Barb and Rob continued the family business. The employees at Coghlan's were important to Barb and they were like a second family. Barb's position at Coghlan's was more than work to her, it was her passion. Barb was in charge of purchasing and she took great pride in her accomplishments at work. To the staff at St. Boniface Palliative Care Unit, thank you, we knew Barb was in caring hands with you. The family would also like to thank the staff on the 6th floor Rehabilitation at Health Sciences Centre, specifically, Dr. Schroeder and Dr. Banerji. A memorial service to honour Barb will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at Fort Garry United Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of Barb's favourite charities, the Sunshine Fund, 302-960 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3G 0R4.

  • Rob was sorry to hear about your sister. I was picking up my son at Viscount on Thursday and I always think about my time there and all the people that I do not see anymore. I noticed the Church parking lot was full and it got my attention so I knew it had to be someone from Fort Garry. A friend of mine from long ago had lost her Dad and I had gone online today to look up the service and saw your sister's obit. I realize now why the church was so busy. Although I have not seen you in many years my heart goes out to you and all your family. Carol - Posted by: Carol Belford ( Rob was a class mate many years ago) on: Oct 05, 2012

  • It was not easy at all for us in this office to hear about the shocking, sad news of Barb's passing. We have been working proudly for Coghlans for over 35 years, it is indeed very hard to say good bye to Barbara who has helped and supported us in all these years. Life is just like a train and we all hold a ticket printed by God. We got on the train at the same time (1953) and I still do not know when my tain will stop but I do know this life train runs really fast. Goodbye, Barbara. You have taught us that we all have to love and care more for our family and cherish each precious moment with our beloved friends. We will always miss you!! - Posted by: Paul Yang (supplier from Taiwan) on: Sep 30, 2012

  • Dear Barb's Family & Friends, I am deeply saddened to hear the news of Barb's passing. Barb & I grew up together on South Drive. She lived only 2 homes apart so needless to say we spent many hours together be it back & forth at each others houses or walking to school together. I hadn't seen Barb for many many years as I moved from Wpg. shortly after getting married. I am very happy that we meet up at VMC's 50th reunion & were able to catch up over the past many years. Barb hadn't changed one bit. She was still that caring gracious, & always smiling Barb I had always known. Our thoughts & prayers are with all of you at this very difficult time. With Our Deepest Sympathy Gaylen & Al Schott - Posted by: Gaylen Schott (nee Scott) (childhood friend) on: Sep 29, 2012

  • Barb and I were friends from a very early age. We shared the same birthday and often had to change our party dates to ensure we had the same friends attend. My deepest feelings go to her family at this time of loss. - Posted by: Linda Watts (childhood friend and neighbor) on: Sep 29, 2012
