When I first took up my position in Chemistry at the University of Manitoba, Gene Burchill was in the office next door to mine. He was always supportive, willing to help me, to share a story or to listen when I needed to unload. He was a gentle presence in our department until his retirement. I was always happy to see him on the occasions he visited us, and we appreciated the gift of one of his quilts which hangs in our office to this day. He will be missed. My sympathy to Gene's family. - Posted by: Phil Hultin (Colleague) on: Oct 03, 2012

Our thoughts and prayers are with Margaret and family. Gene will be greatly missed and leaves a remarkable legacy in his artworks for us to enjoy. Just a couple of years ago, we visited one of Gene's art and quilt shows at the University of Manitoba, and we were totally inspired by his courage and creative spirit that never gave up. - Posted by: Martha Mihaychuk, Susan, and family (Church friends ) on: Oct 03, 2012

Bob Dylan lyrics… As I travel down life's pathway Know not what the years may hold As I ponder hopes grow fonder Precious memories flood my soul Precious memories how they linger How they ever flood my soul In the stillness of the midnight Precious memories sacred scenes unfold. Precious father loving mother Glide across the lonely years And old home scenes of my childhood In fond memories appears Precious memories how they linger How they ever flood my soul In the stillness of the midnight Precious memories sacred scenes unfold. We are the Miller girls. We lived ¼ mile from the Burchill homestead in northern Saskatchewan. We were closely knit in our childhood and preteen years. We walked to school together, enjoyed games together, and sang and danced together. We have been apart for many years but never will forget the times we shared. The Burchill boys were like brothers to us, as we were four girls in our family. Deepest sympathy and love to Margaret and family, Gordon, Bob, Ruth and Marian. To Bob & Gordon Our childhood friends and family members are becoming few and far between. It gets a little lonely at times doesn't it? Thanks for the e-mail - Posted by: Freddie Rendek (Friend) on: Oct 02, 2012

Gene belonged to the generation born in the wildness and isolation of the Canadian prairie, imbued with a work ethic and appreciation of all things. Multi-talented, devoted, a scientist who also knit, made quilts and sang, an excellent athlete, and a kind and helpful neighbour. A dapper and accomplished man with a wry sense of humour. My most heartfelt condolences to Margaret and all the family. It is a loss for all of us. Mr Burchill will be sadly missed. I have several of his quilt patterns, and enjoyed the times he would come in to NWF and purchase fabric and share his expertise. - Posted by: Jan Giesbrecht (friend and fellow quilter) on: Oct 01, 2012
