ALEXANDER (ALEX) DICKOF On Friday, October 5, 2012 Alex's Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m. in St. James Lutheran Church, 871 Cavalier Drive officiated by Rev. James Schnarr, reception to follow in the church basement. Interment will follow in Chapel Lawn Cemetery, 4000 Portage Avenue.

ALEXANDER (ALEX) DICKOF Alexander Dickof of Winnipeg, beloved husband of Doris Dickof, passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness on Saturday, September 29, 2012, at Charleswood Care Centre at the age of 82 years. Left to cherish Alex's memory are his loving wife, Doris Dickof; children Karen Hochman (Shawn; grandchildren Hannah and Daniel), Dean Saffie (Cheryl; grandchildren Melanie and Christopher), and Shawna Gladish (Ed); as well as by his brother, Henry Dickof (niece Diana, nephew Peter); as well as numerous other nieces; nephews; relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his son, Mark Dickof (in 1992); and parents, Frederich (in 1993) and Helen Dickof (in 1984). Born on November 11, 1929 in Tomaszow-Mazowiecki, Poland, Alex's childhood and adolescence were deeply impacted by the occupation of his country by Nazi Germany. The family left Poland before the war ended, and immigrated to Canada in 1946, sponsored by Alex's uncle, Alfonse Dickof, of Wapella, Saskatchewan. Alex moved to Winnipeg during the summer of 1946 in order to gain employment in his profession of tailoring in Winnipeg's historic garment district. In 1948, together with his brother, Henry, he started a custom tailoring business, building up his reputation and clientele, working after hours from his home on Fawcett Street. Dickof Bros. Custom Tailors officially opened its doors in 1952, from the front room of 64 Sherbrook Street. The business prospered for 45 years, finally closing its doors in 1999 when the brothers retired. During Alex's retirement years, he and Doris enjoyed exploring the world through tours, hiking, biking, swimming, fine dining, and dancing. For fifteen years, the happy couple took weekly retreats to their cottage at Matlock. In addition, Alex continued to make custom tailored clothes for valued customers out of his basement workshop at home, and developed a hobby of wine-making which he continued until his health deteriorated several years ago. Alex was a dedicated church choir member, first at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, then at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, and then after his marriage to Doris, at St. James Lutheran Church. One of his favourite activities at Charleswood Care Centre was hymn singing. Alex enjoyed nothing better than a good belly laugh with family and friends. He was always exceptionally well dressed, and had a gentle, kind way. He relied on his Christian faith and close family ties to carry him through life's tribulations. On Friday, October 5, 2012 Alex's Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. in St. James Lutheran Church, 871 Cavalier Drive officiated by Rev. James Schnarr, reception to follow in the church basement. Interment will follow in Chapel Lawn Cemetery, 4000 Portage Avenue. The family would like to thank all the wonderful staff at the Charleswood Care Centre for their exemplary care of Alexander during the past year and two months.
