Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryASIMAKIS (BARBA SIMOS) KATSIKEROS December 23, 1927 September 30, 2012 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Simos on Sunday, September 30, 2012 in his home at the age of 84 years. He will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his wife Panagiota of 60 years; his children Stauvroula Spyridis (Voula), George (Stauvroula) Katsikeros, and Fotina (Wes) Katsikeros-Fulcher (Tina); his grandchildren Aikaterini, George (Tanya), Pamela, Nathaniel, Arianna and great-grandchildren Matteo, Tianna and Olivia; brothers-in-law George Spyracopoulos, John Georgopoulos, Demetri Barbakos and sisters-in-law Vicky Georgopoulos, Helen Spyracopoulos and Maria Gagas, Yiannoula Barbakos along with many nieces, nephews and friends in Greece and Canada. Simos was predeceased by his parents George and Fotoula Katsikeros. His passing leaves an enormous gap in the lives of his family. Simos was born on December 23, 1927 in Tropea, Arcadia, Greece. He was the second youngest of five siblings and grew up in Tropea Village sheep herding Tsopanis to earn money for the family. In his mid-teens he moved into the town of Tripoli working casual labour to earn a living. On February 17, 1951 in Tripoli, Greece he married his lifetime love, friend and confidante Panagiota. Their love stood the test of time, recently celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. They immigrated to Canada in 1966-67 to make a home and raise their three children. Simos' hopes and dreams of immigrating to Canada was to provide his children and family opportunities for an education and prosperity. He arrived in Canada with no assets, no knowledge of the country or command of the English language. He worked for 25 years as a butcher at East West Packers. After raising their children, they shared many return trips to Greece to visit their Greek family and friends. Simos was a very dedicated, kind, loving, patient and loyal husband father and friend. He had a particular love of nature, animals and children. He immersed himself in the active social environments of family functions and traditional celebrations, enjoying laughing and spoiling children with candy and games. He often engaged in card playing at the local Greek mens club called Kafenio . Services for Simos will be held at the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2255 Grant Ave. Prayers will take place on Thursday, October 4 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held Friday, October 5 at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Fr. Theodore Paraskevopoulos officiating. Interment to follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. A gathering of family and friends will follow the service and interment. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made towards a memorial icon in honour of Mr. Asimakis Katsikeros to the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. Pallbearers are Taso Georgopoulos, Nick Lebetsis, Ted Spyrocopoulos, David Golas, Dino Chouzouris and Dimitrios Cotsianis.
