GEORGE EDWARD CLARKE George Edward Clarke, beloved brother, uncle and friend, died on Friday, October 5, 2012 at the Portage District Hospital, attended by their caring medical team and staff from the Manitoba Developmental Centre in Portage la Prairie, MB. George was predeceased by his parents, Amy and Charlie Clarke. He is dearly missed by his brother Leo and sister-in-law Jean, brother Richard, and by his nieces and nephews and their families. George was born on January 29, 1939 to Amy and Charlie Clarke. He was raised not only by them, but by his grandparents and devoted older brothers, Leo and Richard, and indeed, their neighbours and friends. George attended Isaac Brock School and then at the age of 15, moved to the Manitoba Developmental Centre in Portage la Prairie, where they were more able to manage his medical and physical needs. Beyond that, M.D.C. also provided him with a secure home, an education, fulfilling work and a caring, extended family of staff and fellow residents. George lived at M.D.C. for 58 of his 73 years. He called it home and loved his life there. George was special in so many ways that had nothing to do with his intellectual disability. He loved to tease, to laugh, made a great caesar salad and loved taking pictures. His favourite time of year was his holiday at Camp Legacy on Lake Manitoba. He was also famous around Portage for his love of pie and ice cream. For a little boy who wasn't supposed to reach the teen years, he sure showed everyone what love of life and a cheerful attitude can do. George's family would especially like to thank the staff of the Manitoba Developmental Centre, past and present, for their devotion to George over the years. Their skills, compassion and character gave George a complete and happy life. Thanks also go to the staff in ICU of the Portage la Prairie District Hospital for their care and to the people of Portage la Prairie who have accepted the special people at M.D.C. as part of their community. A celebration of George's life will take place on Monday, October 22, at 1:30 p.m. in the Aspen Worship Centre at M.D.C., 840 Third St. N. E., Portage la Prairie. A private interment at Chapel Lawn will follow at a later date. If friends so desire, donations in memory of George can be sent to Lake Manitoba Camp Legacy, Inc., P.O. Box 1532, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 3P5.
