CONSTABLE BRUCE GEORGE SHELEST WINNIPEG POLICE SERVICE Peacefully with his family by his side, Bruce George Shelest passed away on Monday, October 8, 2012 at home. We were lucky to have had a Thanksgiving dinner with Dad on the Saturday. Left to cherish Bruce's memory are his wife of 29 years of marriage, Kelly; son Jordan (Sherry); daughter Taylor. Dad was truly blessed with the arrival of his grandson, Daniel Glen Bruce Shelest born on July 27, 2012. His face always lit up when he saw Daniel. He is also survived by brothers Larry (Linda), Robert (Joyce), and Ken (Shirley); brothers- in-law Cole Summers and Lance Summers (Lori); as well as many Aunts; Uncles; nieces; nephews; and cousins. Dad was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Anne Shelest; in-laws Danny and Blanche Summers; sister Patricia Russell; and nephew Brent Shelest. Bruce was born on December 4, 1956 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. After graduating from Gordon Bell High School, he went to North Dakota to play college football on a scholarship. When Dad returned to Winnipeg, he worked Loss Prevention at Eaton's where he met his soon to be wife, Kelly. They were married the following year on October 12, 1984. Bruce and Kelly were blessed with the birth of their son Jordan on May 1, 1987 and Daughter Taylor March 2, 1992. He was a great father and so proud of them in everything they did. Dad joined the Winnipeg Police Service on September 11, 1989. He took great pride in being a Winnipeg Police Officer and loved the brotherhood. He worked right up until he was diagnosed with cancer. Many wonderful summers were spent by Dad and the family at his in-laws cottage at War Eagle Lake, Kenora where great times were always had. He was an avid fisherman and in past few years took up ice fishing with his son Jordan. Assiniboine Golf Course was Dad's second home the past few summers, golfing daily. He loved watching his daughter Taylor play soccer throughout the years. He always looked forward to his daily walks with his dog, Neeka. Bruce loved working outside and was so happy to build his new fence and landscape his backyard this last summer. Our family enjoyed many barbecues and pool parties with Dad. In compliance with Bruce's wishes there will be no Funeral Service. In September 2011, Dad was diagnosed with Colon Cancer. He fought courageously right up until the end. The family would like to thank Dr. Kotecha, Grace Cancer Care Dr. Pat Harris, and his nurse Arlene. We would also like to thank the amazing staff at Palliative care who made Dad's wishes to stay at home come true. Dr. Mulder, nurse's Jadwiga (Jay) and Judy. The family would like to thank the Winnipeg Police Service, friends and neighbours. As well a special thank you to Cole Summers, and Rob and Joyce for being there throughout his battle. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bruce's name to Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada. Wojcik's Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements. Condolences & Memories (24 entries)

  • Bruce coached me in pee wee hockey back in the early 1970's, he had left a lasting impression in my life and I had reached out to him approximately 10 years ago as I had read about him in an article. We got together for coffee and compared notes, it was a great meeting. I was hired with the Calgary Police service the same year and month he became a member of the Winnipeg Police Service. I had looked him up on this date as I was planning another trip to Winnipeg and was devastated to find out about his passing. My thoughts go out to his family, although we have never met, I want you to know that he has and will remain an influence in my life. - Posted by: Chris Fileccia (Friend) on: Jan 23, 2015

  • It is with great sadness to hear of Bruce's death! It's been quite a few years since I saw him last (I think it was at an indoor soccer field when I was picking up my daughter and he was bringing his to play), but he always had a big smile for me and we'd catch up on life and things and it didn't matter that many years had passed since we last spoke, we always were able to pick up where we left off! God speed my friend! Have a wonderful journey! • Bruce and Kenny and I go way back to when we were kids they though that passing gas in that small bed room of those twins was a funny thing when you sleep over when you had to get up at at 4:30 am to go and play in a hockey tournament. His Mom and Dad had a deal with the two neighbors so they had three front yards to build a ball hockey rink in front of there houses on Walnut with boards and back stops. We won more Stanley Cups than you can imagine. Bruce had a great hockey career and football career so over time you loose touch and one day my son and Jordan were playing golf as junior at Assiniboine golf club and I ask Jordan if he was related to a Bruce and the rest is history. Thanks Jordan for bringing your Dad back into my life he sure did a lot in his. We are all better people to of had him in our life and he will be missed by all.
