ITA EGAN (MRS. B. J. EGAN)
Date of Passing: Oct 14, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryITA EGAN (MRS. B. J. EGAN) On October 14, 2012, with her family at her side, Ita Egan, beloved mother of Margaret, Enda, Breen, Cliodna, Eamon and Deirdre Egan, died peacefully. She was predeceased in 2002 by her devoted husband of 51 years, Dr. Bernard Joseph Egan. She was also predeceased by her parents, two sisters and two brothers. Born in County Leitrim, Ireland, the daughter of teachers Michael McLoughlin and Margaret Gray McLoughlin, Ita grew up in Salt Hill and Galway. Educated at Taylor's Hill Dominican Convent for Girls, she received her medical training in radiography from University College Galway and went on to work in radiography in Ireland and England. An accomplished pianist, Ita held a Teacher's Diploma in piano and composition. In 1951, Ita married Bernard Egan, whom she met while both were in medical school, and they began their life together in Canada first in Bell Island, Newfoundland and since 1958, in Winnipeg. With her medical background, she was instrumental in helping her husband establish and expand his thriving medical practice. Her focus and devotion however were directed to their children. She was the heart of a loving and joyful home, filled with laughter, friends and non-stop activity. Ita was a woman of strong Catholic faith, and an active supporter of the family's church, schools and communities. She served on the parish committees of St. Joseph the Worker and St. John Brebeuf Churches, was particularly devoted to St. Mary's Academy and a past Chair of the St. Paul's High School Advisory Board. She led the initiatives that established the first Seniors Drop-In Centre and Roland Michener Arena, both in Transcona, and served on innumerable public committees over the years, balancing her strong and oft expressed views on issues with a natural gift for diplomacy. She generously contributed to many charities, particularly for those disadvantaged in life, and had great admiration for the important work done over the years at Rossbrook House and the Holy Names House of Peace for Newcomer Women. Ita loved swimming at the Winnipeg Winter Club where she was a member for 50 years. In demand as a bridge partner, she was a popular presence on the Winnipeg bridge circuit. A gifted hostess, her dinner parties and ladies' lunches were legendary, and she enjoyed each gathering as much as her guests did. Her most treasured times were with Bernie and their children, who never missed Christmas in River Heights, summers at Winnipeg Beach or the family's annual retreat to Fair Hills, Minnesota, a tradition Ita maintained for 52 consecutive summers, most recently in July. Her elegance and sharp wit will be missed as her friends continue to convene in years to come. Though she loved Canada, Ita never lost contact with her Irish roots, family and friends. She returned to Ireland often, always to her beloved Galway Bay where, on the same morning as her Winnipeg funeral, a special Mass will be said, celebrated by her brother Rev. Fr. Terence (Paddy) McLoughlin. Ita had a magical gift for friendship and her home was the first port of call for many newly-arrived Irish friends, while her warmth and hospitality made the Egan house the gathering place for generations of her children's friends. No matter the number gathered at 1220 on any particular evening (and there were usually many), Ita was the one who made the evening dazzling. She had that certain grace. A good life, well and elegantly lived. Funeral Mass will be celebrated by her parish priest, Father Mark Tarrant at St. John Brebeuf Church, 1707 John Brebeuf Pl. on Friday, October 19 at 11:00 a.m. The family would like to offer special thanks to the caring staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their help, consideration and respect. A special thanks to Dr. Nene Rush of the Family Medicine Group and to the team at the Heart Failure Clinic. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ita Egan's name to The Holy Names House of Peace Home for Newcomer Women 211 Edmonton Street R3C 1R4. Only just heard about Ita's passing. Mum and Dad were always so grateful to both herself and Bernie for helping them feel at home in Winnipeg, and they held both of them in the highest regard. Ita was more like family than 'just' a friend, and even threw a baby shower for me when our eldest son (now nearly 20) was born. I will always remember her as elegant and graceful, even when she had a broken arm (which caused her a great deal of trouble!). So terribly sorry for your loss. - Posted by: A Conroy (longtime family friends) on: Nov 21, 2012

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your mother. It was a pleasure to see her and Enda at my father's funeral three years ago. She was a good friend to my mother and she will be missed. I hope your wonderful memories of her will bring you some comfort. - Posted by: Laurie Herd ( ) on: Oct 21, 2012

It is a sad time because Ita's passing is truly the end of an era. We will never forget her smile, her stories and the Egan parties. We had so much fun! In fact, we would have never met if it hadn't been for the Egans. Our sincere condolences to all! Pete and Sherry - Posted by: Pete and Sherry MacDonald (Friends) on: Oct 19, 2012

Ita, just like her Piest said,Waited and went at her time and at her pace. She felt her children ready. As the service ended and Ita's draped casket went by with her family following close by, it was not like she was silent , but standing tall and waving good bye to all that came. With her FAMILY stoic and in tears, and why not. The whole room cried knowing , Ita was soaring with Eagles. What a life, what a legacy. Who didn't love her. Look around hundreds of people there to pay tribute to a wonderful shining star.I am devestated and heart broken to know i will never be wrapped in those Motherly arms with so much attention focused on me ,as we shared all those wonderful , magical moments called life.Ita I was so luckey to know you, so luckey to have had you in my life. You were a Gift. Forever Remembered, Never in Sadness,You reined big and large,Not only in the Lives of Many ,you remain forever in their Hearts......Thank-you Ita. I am glad to say I Loved You and I will try to walk as Big in my World as You did in Yours....FOREVER MISSED.....Sharon - Posted by: Sharon Stern (Friend) on: Oct 19, 2012

Hello to my Canadian Egan cousins at this time of Ita's death. You were fortunate that your mother was in your life for so long. I was flower girl at Bernard and Ita's wedding in Salthill Church. As with many of the Irish diaspora I didn't meet her again as we didn't coincide with holidays in Ireland. She seems to have been an active and sociable woman who enjoyed her family so very much. I wish you all well as you get on with the next phase of your life as orphans as you continue the strong bond engendered by your parents. If you ever visit London I would love to meet up. We still live in the same house that Margaret visited decades ago. - Posted by: Jeanne Rathbone (Ita was married to my uncle Bernard whom we called Ber) on: Oct 19, 2012

Little memory of Ita truly, personally. My parents Tom (his brother) and my mother Ethna were close to Ber and supported him during his university days, way back during the (2nd world) war, out in Headford, Galway. My sisters tell me they will be at a mass, conducted by Fr Paddy tomorrow, I think. Sympathies to all of you. Kind regards and thoughts, Your cousin, Noelle - Posted by: Noelle Egan ( Ita's husband was the brother of my father Tom Egan (i. e Ber's brother) and she the sister of our) on: Oct 18, 2012

Was sad to hear of Mrs. Egan's passing. I have many fond memories, as a child growing up in Transcona attending St. Joseph the Worker School, of her and her loving family! I had the pleasure of having dinner with her, Breen and Eamon at the 50th anniversary of the church a couple of years ago. Peace and love to all the family! I was a young girl when I met Ita. Such a lady! It was like meeting the queen, and finding out that the queen not only had a warm smile and a strong hug, but a great sense of humour, too. My family's thoughts and prayers are with the Egan family. - Posted by: Amy Potter Helbren, Ryan & Rori Helbren (friends of the family) on: Oct 18, 2012

Gene and I are saddened for your family at this time of sorrow. Your mother was a lovely woman and I always enjoyed her company when she, Vicky Wilson and I would spend time together. Your mother was witty, vibrant and full of life. She will be missed, but your memories will strengthen your love for her. - Posted by: Carol and Gene Barbee (Friends) on: Oct 18, 2012

Your Mum's achievements, grace, and openess were always enchancting, unassuming and welcoming. We will miss running into her in the neighbourhood. Our community is dimmer without her presence and we would echo that her's was life well lived. Our family's thoughts and prayers are with you all. - Posted by: John Kiernan (visitor @ 1220) on: Oct 18, 2012
