ASTA JONINA MITCHELL (JO) Our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend Jo, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2012 at the age of 82 years, having been surrounded by her family and loved ones. She was born Asta Jonina Asmundson, in Gravelbourg, SK, on January 2, 1930, the fifth of 12 children. At the age of 17 Jo completed her training and began working as a teacher. On July 14, 1951 she married James Harold Mitchell. They spent most of their married life in Pinawa, MB. She was a devoted mother to her five children: Cynthia Ozuk (John), Gregory, Pamela Henderson, Melanie Kolomyja and Brett (Tina). She will also be dearly missed by her grandchildren: Jennifer Henderson (Andy), Jared Ozuk, Jocelyn McFaren (Shaun), David (Jenny), Rebecca Nordquist (Tom Norman), Allyson Hornung (Mark), Candace Houle, Zachary Henderson, Devin Henderson and Joelyne Kolomyja; her great-grandchildren: Kyle (Asia), Drew, Liam, Scott, Brianna, Andrea, Macy, Payton, Malin, Benjamin and Alexis; and her daughter-in-law Susan Mitchell. Also left to treasure her memory are her sisters Solveig Gibson, Clara Hadfield, Laura Zanewich, Helga Gibson, and Elizabeth Hicks (Clare); her brother Harvey (Carolyn); her brother-in-law Joseph Brown; and her sister-in-law Norma Asmundson and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Jim in 1999; her parents Kristbjorg and Asmundur Asmundson; her brothers Edward Asmundson and Harold Asmundson; her sisters Anna Burnell, Frances Brown and Kristjana Zaporzan. We know that her faith in Jehovah God and her belief in a resurrection to life on a paradise earth gave her much comfort and strength. A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 29 at the Kingdom Hall, 1877 Inkster Blvd. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations can be made to the Watchtower Society or the charity of your choice. We will miss you Mom. Over and Out

  • 💟 We miss seeing you and sharing our Bible hope every week on the phone.....The Scriptures we shared and the deep Spiritual bond we had ---- helped to keep our Hope in the coming Paradise Earth strong. We know we will see you soon, happy and healthy as Jehovah God promises. We think of you every day and know you would have enjoyed studing the Bible and watching all the Videos on JW.ORG. • Missing our regular phone chats Mom - the ones you always ended with "Love you. Over and out." Missing rye toast at your place. It always tasted the best there. There is big gap in my life. I miss you so much. You are missed by many people. You truly were a good person, caring friend and a very loving Mom. Love you forever. • Our friend - Jo - with the huge smile; the welcoming hugs and the heart big enough to have room for everyone. Growing up together we all knew we were welcome at Jo & Jim's house. The memories that our family and hers have will all be retold when we are back together again. Love to you all - till we meet again. • Sigh. The more stories I hear about how my Mom touched other people's lives for the better, the more I come to realize what a great mother I had. And that is very comforting. Yes, "Over and out", Mom... for now. I hope to see you in the new system, Jehovah willing. - Posted by: Greg (Son) on: Nov 01, 2012

  • We just came home from the Memorial Service for Mom at the Maples Kingdom Hall. The hall was filled to capacity with Mom's dear Family and Friends. The fragrance of the beautiful Floral arrangements reminded us of how Mom's next breath will be in Paradise surrounded with Flowers and Gardens .... without pain, sickness, old age and Death. The soothing words from the Bible about that special hope Jehovah God promises and the Prayer were a great comfort to all gathered. Mom would have been happy that everthing was according to her wishes. She loved the lyrics to the Song "KEEP YOUR EYES on the PRIZE" which were printed in the Brochure next to her picture. Thank you to all who came to comfort us in our loss, and all who helped with the lovely Coffee & Dainties afterwards. Jesus Christ said "Do not marvel at this because the hour is coming in which all those in the Memorial tombs will hear his Voice, and come out....to a Resurrection". JOHN 5: 28, 29. "God will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and Death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away......Write, because these words are faithful and True." REVELATION 21: 3 - 5. Dear Mom, You gave us the best Gift....faithfulness to your Creator until your Death....May we be counted worthy to be reunited with you and our dear Loved ones when Paradise is restored. - Posted by: John & Cynthia Ozuk (Daughter & Son-in-Law) on: Oct 29, 2012

  • It was a pleasure knowing Jo. She had a practical, realistic view of life. She had compassion and understanding of the human condition. And she maintained her spiritual outlook in the face of adversities. What a good example for all. - Posted by: Marjorie Hanowski (Friend) on: Oct 27, 2012

  • Grandma has been the rock of the family for so many years. So wise and loving. She was such a hard worker, but always done with joy, bare feet and whistling! I will miss her thumb print icecream cones, her hugs so tight you thought you might suffocate, the sound of her cards shuffeling on an old t.v. table, her blurting out the answer to Wheel of Fortune after being asked to give the rest of us a chance. Watching The Price is Right, not knowing if I actually ever really won a game of Rummy or not, a cheque to buy a new dress for the summer assembly. Bendy staws, CJOB radio, "Let me tell you 'bout my grandchildren", scrabble, studied Watchtowers every Sunday, Dove soap and many many more. Thanks for being my Granny, I couldn't have asked for more! - Posted by: Allyson (Granddaughter) on: Oct 27, 2012

  • Asta (Jo) Mitchell andI became bother and sister-in-law on September 5, 1964 when I and her younger sister - Frances Merion (deceased) married and I was accepted into the Asmundson family, immediately inheriting many nieces and nephews. Jo was lovely sister-in-law totally devoted to her family and her God, Jehovah. Over the years many memorable visits were made to 50 Grey Crescent, thoroughly enjoyed by blaine, Rose-lynn, Bret, Greg, Pam, Cindy and Melanie. Of course, Fran and I shared many a happy moment with Jo and Jim. I remember specifically temporarily "boarding" there when I was taking part of a Mac course at A.E.C.L. I will never forget Jo getting up every morning while I was there, preparing my breakfat and putting together a wonderful lunch for me. Jo was such a giving, lovely, loving person and I know touched all she knew and met. She now rests in peace in the memory of her true God Jehovah and looks forward to arising in a ressurection to eventually a perfect life. You are always remembered, Jo. Rest in peace until that special time. Joe Brown - Posted by: Joseph Brown (brother-in-law) on: Oct 27, 2012
