WINTON LANCE NEWMAN Lance took his life in Victoria, B.C on October 21, 2012. He is predeceased by his father Winton (2002), his mother Betty (2004) and is deeply mourned by his sisters Melissa (Smith) and Kerry. Born June 9, 1956 in Levac, ON, Lance spent his youth in Thompson, MB and struggled with depression and addiction for most of his adult life. Predeceased by his beloved brother Matthew in 1978, Lance searched for peace and happiness ever since. Thank you to the Salvation Army of Winnipeg for the support they gave to Lance and to all of his friends and family who tried to help him throughout his life. Donations in his memory to the Salvation Army would be appreciated.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • I'm not sure this will get to anyone but ... I found what looks like a diary of Lance's, from the 1st half of 2005, among my late father's documents. I have no idea how or why it was there. I have quickly looked through it, to identify to whom it belongs. I also noticed letters to Melissa and some mention of depression. If anyone from his immediate family wishes to retrieve it, you may contact me at marc.lalonde@shaw.ca. If I don't hear from anyone within a month or so, I will arrange to have it recycled. - Posted by: Marc Lalonde (none) on: Jan 07, 2018

  • he was my best friend - I truly miss him - Posted by: John Hak (Best Friend) on: Jan 23, 2016

  • I was very sorry to hear about your loss of Lance. His name came up at the Thompson high school reunion in early October of this year. Some of us who grew up in Thompson with Lance and your family travelled a path similar to his and together we shared how we had often thought of him while remembering him fondly. Our shared hope was that he was finding his way through. May he now rest in peace. My sincere condolences to Kerry and Melissa. - Posted by: Sheila Norquay (friend from Thompson) on: Nov 11, 2012

  • Our deepest sympathies to you on the loss of your brother. I recall the smiles and laughter of you and your brother playing outside together. Lean on your good memories and comfort in knowing he is at peace now. Love from the White family. - Posted by: Cheryl (White) Burdeny (Neighbor on Cypress Cres., Thompson, Manitoba) on: Oct 31, 2012

  • Those teenage years spent at R.D.Parker Collegiate gave me many opportunities to cross paths with Lance and I easily concluded at the time that he had it all- he was very handsome, good sense of humor, the girls liked him, he lived in the rich part of town, dad was the President of Inco, he was one of the very few who had a pool, and I cut their lawn many times; in my mind he had it all, and now this awful news on Earth only tempered by the goodness of the Salvation Army in assisting in placing Lance on his journey to God and to Heaven, because from the paths that we crossed, that's where he should be.Deepest sympathies to Kerry and Melissa and restant family. - Posted by: Joseph Amorim (Highschool Friend) on: Oct 28, 2012

  • I remember when the town of Thompson decided to build a road through the bush behind Lances house and Lance, Neil Rutherford and I decided to try and stop the project. We dug a ditch across the road but they filled It in. We nailed 6 inch spikes into 2 by 4's and buried them in the road and hid in the bush and watched the gravel trucks get flat tires. Our battle to preserve what we believed was our Forrest was a losing one. I do remember Lance being happy in those times. Perhaps he has found peace now. - Posted by: Robin Henderson (Childhood friend ) on: Oct 27, 2012

  • My sincerely condolences on the loss of your Brother Lance. I am deeply touched by the story of his struggle. My Son Michael also took his life in 1993, after much the same kind of life story. Sometimes our earthly help is just not enough, and we must let them go so they can finally be at peace. Cherish the good memories you have of Lance. I care!
