ANNIE (NAN) MATHESON August 11, 1916 - October 21, 2012 It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother at Mission Memorial Hospital in Mission B.C., at the age of 96 years. She was preceded by her husband Donald in 1985, and her companion of 10 years, Harry McKenzie in 2010. She leaves to mourn, her daughter Patricia (granddaughter Rosanna, grandson Bill) and her son Donald (wife Francesqua and stepdaughter Ashley, grandsons James and Ian). In addition, she leaves behind her great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Nan was born in Scotland and is still remembered by numerous relatives there and abroad. As a young woman she graduated with qualifications as a Psychiatric Nurse and dealt with many mentally challenged individuals. She remained in Scotland throughout the Second World War until 1946, when she sailed to Canada as a war bride on RMS Aquitania. She resided in Winnipeg up until 2000 when she moved to British Columbia to be with Harry and his son David. Scottish hogmanay was a ritual at home on the last day of the year. Back in the days when everyone knew their neighbors it was easy to fill the house with family and friends. Many summers were spent with family friends, Flo and Dave Brown, at the cottages of Laclu. One of the great enjoyments of Nan was the regular card games she had with the "girls". Like most card games, sometimes she won and sometimes she lost - the unknown is what kept them going. Our mother also worked part time for the Deaf Centre in Winnipeg and a convalescent home. After getting through the Second World War she also survived two floods in Winnipeg (1950 and 1997). Another sign of our mother's strength was as a survivor of breast cancer. Nan was a long time member of the United Church Women of Canada, serving on many committees and helping with teas and other fundraising events. Later in life she started to look into her genealogy and her family ties in Scotland. Some of the information was traced back to the mid 1800s with very interesting results. Services are to held Friday, November 2 at Thomson in the Park, 1291 McGillivray Blvd., are in care of the arrangements. Rev. Don McIntyre will officiate. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.

Nan was the kindest lady I have known. She was a warbride along with my mother Gladys Lamsdale. My mother enjoyed many a New Years Eve Party at the home of Don and Nan's in Winnipeg. We visited Nan and Harry at their home in B.C. After Harry's death I lost touch with Nan. Deepest sympathy to the family. You have lost a lovely lady...Memories of her will be cherished.
