GORDON MCKINLEY URQUHART October 16, 1912 - October 26, 2012 Gordon passed away peacefully on October 26, 2012 just 10 days after celebrating his 100th birthday. Gordon was born in Winnipeg on October 16, 1912, to Martha and Robert Urquhart. He married Norma Kathleen Gordon in 1942 and they had 58 happy years together. Gordon started out his working life at Richardson's and joined William Neilson Ltd. in 1940, as a salesman, working his way up to Western Sales Manager. He was affectionately known as Mr. Jersey Milk to friends and associates. Gordon learned violin as a child. He played in orchestra during his school years, and his love of music continued throughout his life. Gordon was a Life member of the Winnipeg Lions Club, known for his work for Lions Manor and Camp Manitou, where he was on the Board of Directors for several years, and in January 2011 he received his 60 year Monarch Milestone Chevron Award. Gordon and Norma enjoyed travelling, spending many winters in Victoria, B.C. They spent many wonderful years at their cottage, Roads Ende, at Victoria Beach, which was a very special place for them. Gordon was predeceased by his wife Norma in 2000, an infant son John in 1949 and two brothers, Norman and Lloyd. He is survived by his daughter Marilyn Peach (George), of Richmond, BC, granddaughter Jennifer Watson, (Brady Gill), of Winnipeg, grandson John Watson, of Courtenay, BC and seven great-grandchildren, Nadia, Charlotte, and Adrienne Gill; Sarah, Katherine, Rachel and James Watson, whom Papa adored. He is also survived by two nephews, Lyle (Glenda) and Dale (Sue) Urquhart and their families. A birthday party was held for Gordon's 100th Birthday which he was able to attend and enjoy with family and friends. It was truly a Celebration of his long and memorable life. He will be forever loved, admired and respected by all who knew him. There will be a private family service at a later date. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to Camp Manitou, 4-850 Green Oakes Lane, Headingley, MB R4H 1C5.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Gordon's wife Norma was my mother Ruth's oldest sister. When I was growing up, Uncle Gordon and Aunt Norma would visit my family periodically (we lived in Alabama; Dad was a university professor of music). I have clear and warm memories of Uncle Gordon, and a particularly fond memory that he always brought the kids what seemed like an impossibly large box of chocolates as a gift. It was the talk among my young friends that I had an uncle who worked for a chocolate company "in Canada," a world far away. I am saddened to hear of Gordon's passing but warmed to learn of the love he received from his large family. - Posted by: Loran Fraser (Nephew) on: Nov 07, 2012

  • My Grandfather had a full and rewarding life and I and my children will miss him dearly. Thank you to all that attended his 100th Birthday and for those that have sent thoughts and prayers. He enjoyed the visits and sharing the memories with Lion's members, friends and family that he had the chance to see again for one last time. Rest in peace Gramps. - Posted by: John Watson (Grandson) on: Nov 05, 2012

  • Gordon was a very special person in my young adult life. He was my " Victoria Beach Dad", as I was able to spend many summers at 'Roads' Ende' with Gordon, Norma and my special friend, Marilyn. Those memories were fun-filled and precious. Gordon was encouraging, supportive, and thoughtful. He gave the Toast to the Bride at my wedding, and I was honored that he did so. Gordon, if you are looking down on us, my gratitude and thanks for who you were. - Posted by: Lauraine DuPont (friend) on: Nov 04, 2012

  • Thank you Gordon for your assistance when I was the CEO of the Lions Club of Winnipeg Housing Centres when you were the Chairman of Board. Many of you became my friends as well as employers and together we met the needs of Winnipeg's elderly, families and children. Now to the family, I prayed for him regularly for many years. May God comfort you all and thank God for such a wonderful man. With my sincere sympathy, Jake Suderman - Posted by: Jake Suderman (Chairman of my board of directors) on: Oct 29, 2012
