R. GEORGE GOBERT
Date of Passing: Nov 09, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryR. GEORGE GOBERT On the beautiful sunny morning of Friday, November 9, 2012, Dad made his final take-off and went heaven bound. Dad leaves his wife Lil (nee Zylema) of 58 years, and children Alan, Ted (Lori), Warren (Wendy), and April (Trevor Ketler) and grandchildren, Ryan, Lane, Mitchell, Larissa and Reese. Dad spent his entire life living on the Riverbend Dairy Farm in St. Vital. Dad and Mom were married in 1954, and worked side by side running the family dairy farm, selling farm fresh milk, well known throughout Winnipeg. The cows were sold in 1975 and they continued with the grain farm until their retirement in 2008. As a young man Dad followed his passion of flying and in 1958, achieved his pilot's license and bought his first airplane - a J3 Cub. Dad and Mom joined the Manitoba Flying Farmers in 1958, and made many life-long friendships. Dad operated a float plane base on the Red River and a grass landing strip just north of the farm which was called Gobert's Field. Dad loved to fly early in the morning and made a habit of buzzing the farm house at daybreak to get us kids to bolt upright in bed. Dad could always be found at the head of the kitchen table and many took a seat seeking some of his freely given, frank advice. He had a witty sense of humour and strong opinions and always had a long-winded story to share. He had a knack for always making the kids feel extra-special, along with some good-natured teasing. Dad was a gentle soul and will be greatly missed by all that knew him. The service will be at Winnipeg Free Evangelical Church, 500 Lagimodiere Blvd., on Wednesday, November 14, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. - light lunch to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation in George's memory. Arrangements made by Wheeler Funeral Home (204) 224-1525.

I was a teenager when I was introduced to the Gobert family...moreover senior George..his wife..two of his sons Jerry and Willy Gobert. I never really knew George junior. My relationship with Goberts started around 1965 and suddenly his brother Renie passed away. As a young kid I was working at the time for Renie Gobert alongside with my uncle Jerry...but suddenly all that changed on Renie Gobert's death. But George senior said to me and he said this "son I know you want to go to school..you can work on my farm.. milk cows..sell milk..make hay ..and you can go to Glenlawn Highshool in the school year". Immediately I jumped on that idea. That is how I got a really good relationship with Jerry and Willy Gobert. My time with Gerry and Willy and at that time Jerry's wife Emily was absolutely precious for the next 4 yrs. We talked about many things in that time frame...I believe I learned to mature...this farm the Riverbend Dairy farm is a part of my history...so here I am..grateful..I'm 77 now ..4 kids..retired but drive a schoolbus..and get to play lots n lots of hockey for last 17 yrs. I hope you enjoy reading...but this is a true story all started Riverbend Dairy Farm...George Gobert senior....many thanks Arend - Posted by: Arend Terae (A farm hand at the Riverbend Dairy farmt) on: Jan 07, 2025

It has been many years (mid-70's)and a lotta miles since i was a regular at your farm and property, and most of that was spent racing MX around the track that Mr. Gobert (out of respect, i don't think any of us even knew his first name) carved out in the back. But in all those years and all those miles i remember him and all of you well and fondly, and you have all my condolences in his loss now. There should be a lot more people like "Mr. Gobert" in this world, and i will remember him always. - Posted by: LJ Brock (Acquaintance) on: Dec 11, 2012

George always had a soft heart for this fellow redhead. I will miss his opinions, his earnest interest in everything that was going on in my life, his quick wit and his tenderness and laughter. Those Flying Farmer connections run long and deep and through Flying Farmers, George and Lil became a part of my supportive family. When I moved away from home to attend Brandon University and was terribly homesick, Lil and George took me into their home, would pick me up at the bus depot and welcomed me as if I was their own. That was many many years ago and that friendship has lasted all these years. My sincerest condolences to Lil, Al, Ted, Warren and April and your families. I achieved my pilot licence in 1957 and first met Geo and his J 3 Cub at Lyncrest Airport in 1958, and subsequently kept my various float planes on the Red River behind Geo and Lil's home for many years. Heard about George's departure while down south, I was hoping for a final briefing, however such are opportunities lost I enjoyed his council in my younger years as a pilot, and later as an investigator, welcomed his insights to some of the challenges I faced in my line of work. George will be missed by the community, and by my wife and I especially Bon Voyage George,.. Keep the Blue side up - Posted by: Ross Peden (Friend) on: Nov 13, 2012

While our families have not known each other very well, we are saddened at the passing of George. We pray that the family's fond memories of his robust years will soon displace today's sadness at the end of his life. There are people in our life that we can't remember not being part of our family life. Goberts are one of those families. As long as I can remember my dad and George have been exchanging Sunday morning phone calls. Long before caller ID, us kids would just yell "Dad, it's George.", when the phone rang before it was even answered. We would kid them about being just like 2 old ladies as they could talk at length about what they saw at a farm sale or what they were spraying or who knows what. George's passing made me sad. He was a fun guy to be around. Mark and I would like to pass on our thoughts and prayers to Lil, and all rest of the family. Maybe he is buzzing (like all good Flying Farmers) that big heavenly house now. God be with you. - Posted by: Donna (Kraft) Berge (Family friend) on: Nov 13, 2012

I believe I met your father years ago, when visiting Aunt Edith in Winnipeg. My dad was Adelson Gobert who passed on in September 1949 at the same time John was born in Blenheim, Ontario. Wilf has probably given you the family tree by now or you may have it from Helen Frost. My deepest sympathy to all the family. - Posted by: Irene Jeannettte Gobert ( Nee Neuts) (First Cousin) on: Nov 13, 2012

Lil and Family, So terribly sorry to hear about George. You people were so great to us when we moved to Winnipeg as a young couple. We spent a lot of times enjoying your hospitality then and in the years since. George was a special person to us and John thought of him as a second Dad. We will miss him dearly. I first met George in 1972 when he bought his first spray plane. I did work on his aircraft off and on for quite a few years. George had a friendly face with a genuine smile and personality to match. The measure of a man while he's on the green side is directly proportional to how people feel about you when they hear that you've left us. Take care and see you on the other side Buddy. - Posted by: Hartley Dueck (Friend) on: Nov 12, 2012

I have many childhood memories of driving past the Gobert's farm and being impressed by the big barn and totally fascinated with the airfield next door. We bought milk there as well a number of times. It's been sad to see the farmland of south St. Vital disappear and sadder to read of the passing of those who worked that land and gave so much of themselves to provide for and improve the life of the community. R.I.P. Mr. Gobert and condolences to his family on their personal loss. - Posted by: Gloria Lasko (Farm family neighbour down St. Mary's Road.) on: Nov 12, 2012
