HLIB SIRKO At Trinity Village in Kitchener, ON., on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 after a brief illness with family by his side, Hlib Sirko aged 91 years. Hlib was married in 1945 to the former Nadia Rybak who predeceased him in 1999. He lived in France during the Second World War where he was the editor of the newspaper for the Ukrainian people. He came to Canada in 1948 and worked at the University of Montreal in the library, moving to Ottawa in 1961 and retiring from the National Library of Canada in 1976 as chief of cataloging. Hlib was a prolific writer and received a number of degrees from the Universities of Ottawa and Montreal. Loving father to Ariana Sirko of Winnipeg and Yara Sirko-Goddard and her husband Ed of Waterloo, dear Dzyadzyo to Lisa and Simon Grubb and Andrea and Trevor MacDonald and two great-granddaughters Rita and Paisley. Predeceased by his parents, one brother and two brothers-in-law Oleh Rybak and Dr. W.S. Rybak. At Hlib's request there will be no visitation at the Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday from the Church of the Transfiguration at 11:00 a.m. with Father Volodymyr Yanishevsky officiating. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society as expressions of sympathy through the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 1-519-745-9495.
