IRENE REBECCA FINNSON December 8, 1948 - October 27, 2012 With great sadness we announce the very sudden passing of Irene, loving mother, amma, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. Born in Gimli, Manitoba, the second daughter to Brandur and Loa Finnson, Irene was raised on the family farm in Vidir. She received her elementary education in a one-room schoolhouse (Lowland), her secondary education at Arborg Collegiate, and later attended the University of Manitoba. In 1971, two years after the birth of her daughter, Stefanie, they moved to Vancouver where Irene met and married David Myles. They had a son, Daniel Myles, born in 1985. Despite having left Manitoba as a young woman, Irene's heart and roots remained there. A diligent worker, caregiver and volunteer, she dedicated her life to raising a family and preserving her Icelandic Canadian heritage. Irene is survived by her daughter, Stefanie Rainaldi of Surrey, BC, her son Daniel Myles of Burnaby, BC, three grandchildren Christopher, Kaylee and Jeffrey Rainaldi, sisters Gayle Fortt of Surrey, BC and Faye (Ralph) Sigurdson of Elkford, BC as well as one uncle, Asgeir Finnsson, of Arborg, MB and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A memorial service will be held at the Scandinavian Centre (6540 Thomas St) in Burnaby, BC on Monday, November 12, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. Interment of ashes and a service will take place in Vidir, Manitoba at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Irene's family would prefer that donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Icelandic Canadian Club of BC.
