RONALD C. HINDS PH.D., P. GEOPH. March 6, 1954 - October 30, 2012 Our younger brother Ron has left us at the young age of 58. He suffered from dementia for up to five years, the last two confined to hospital and a care facility. We greatly appreciate the care he was given by his partner of nine years, Jessica Jaramillo and her parents in Columbia. Ron passed away in Calgary on October 30, 2012 and the funeral took place on November 2, 2012. Ron was raised in Transcona by his parents Nora and Cyril Hinds and graduated from TCI in 1971. He is remembered for his chess playing ability, at times taking on 20 opponents at one time. Ron attained the Masters level in chess, and was very active in the Calgary Chess Club. After high school Ron followed his brother into the facility of Geologic Sciences at the University of Manitoba, receiving a B.Sc (1975) and M.Sc. (1983) in Geophysics. Ron worked for a number of oil companies in Calgary during the 1980s but left to pursue his dream of getting a Ph.D. He registered at The University of Pretoria and graduated with a Ph.D. in Geophysics in 1995. Ron returned to North America to teach at the University of Missouri-Rollo in 1995. After teaching for two years he moved to Calgary and worked for Pan Canadian and Talisman Energy. Ron co-authored a geophysics text with long-term friend and associate Rick Kusmizki and taught courses based on the text in many countries. Ron is survived by his brothers Bob/Chuck (Norma) in Nanaimo and Ed in Winnipeg. He will be greatly missed by his nieces Taryn Hinds (Winnipeg) and Christina Ritchie (Moose Jaw) and nephews Ian Hinds (Saskatoon) and Kendal Hinds (Thompson). His parents predeceased him, Nora in 1970 and Cyril in 1994. Our brother was truly a man of the world having associations and relationships with individuals from many countries. If you knew Ron please leave a message in the guest book online in the obituaries of the Winnipeg Free Press as a memorial is being considered for the spring.

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • Many great times were had in the Hines' rec room, from the spin the bottle games to just listening to records like "A nice Pair", which featured one side of The Guess Who, and one side of The Staccatos. Many fond memories of our time there. See you down the road, Ron, Fondly, Zap - Posted by: Robert Zaporzan (classmate/friend) on: Dec 11, 2012

  • Uncle Ron. I miss you and will never forget you. I wish I had the chance to say goodbye but I know I will see you again someday. Say hi to Grandma and Grandpa for me. I love you. xoxx - Posted by: Taryn (Niece) on: Dec 05, 2012

  • Went to school with Ron from grade 1 to 12. In Junior High 1967 {John Gunn} Ron organized a little get together in his "Rec Room", one Saturday afternoon, and invited a few girls from class. Well in no time out came "the bottle" and we proceeded to spin that bottle. I know it was my first time kissing a girl, (Karen R.) probably for all the participants! Never forgot about that afternoon Thx Ron! - Posted by: David Perich (friend/classmate) on: Nov 18, 2012

  • I am so sorry to hear of Ron's passing. We didn't know each other very well. I knew Bobby more than Eddie and Ronnie. I am your Uncle Jimmy's daughter. He was a very smart man and sorry to hear of the dementia. Hope to hear from one of you in the future. Nice to know where you are. The last time I saw you both was at Uncle Cy's funeral. Guess you know that Laurene passed away March 11, 2011. She was 92. My deepest sympathy again. - Posted by: Barbara Bernice Harris (nee Hinds) (Cousin) on: Nov 14, 2012
