NICHOLAS FRIESEN Nicholas Friesen passed away peacefully at home on Monday, November 12, 2012 at 96 years of age. Nicholas was born on February 1, 1916 in Grigorievka, Ukraine to Gerhard and Justina Friesen and immigrated to Canada in 1925 along with five sisters and six brothers. They initially settled in Headingley, Manitoba later moving to McCauley, Manitoba. During the Second World War, he served in the Merchant Marine on the west coast after which he tried salmon fishing before returning to Manitoba to work in the rural electrification program and in oil field construction in the Virden area. It was here that he met a young secretary Doreen Haskett. After their marriage in 1950 they moved to Headingley where he and Doreen farmed and operated a construction business until he retired when he was in his seventies. An honorary lifetime membership at the Charleswood Legion and winters in Alamo, Texas provided many happy times with wonderful friends, both new and old. His inquisitive mind and entrepreneurial spirit led to patents for flexible snowmobile skis and automated horse feed vending machines. More recently he was tinkering with models/designs for humidifiers and passive solar heat walls. A loving and caring husband, father and grandfather, he supported his children and grandchildren in their dreams and aspirations. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 62 years, Doreen Eleanor Friesen (Haskett), his children Lloyd (Linda Lou) Friesen, Brent (Denise) Friesen and Linda Friesen. He will be lovingly remembered by: his grandchildren Tara Friesen, Laura Friesen, Ashley (Mark) Mummery, Sarah Friesen and Nicholas Friesen; his sisters Helen (Jim) Baron, Betty (Charley) Kaufman, and his brothers Ed (Pat) and Henry (Vivien), as well as numerous nieces and nephews who have fond memories of family reunions at the farm. He was predeceased by his brothers: Art (Anne), Dave (Minnie), George (Katherine), Peter (Mary), and his sisters: Sonja (Paul) Reimer, Katja or Kathy (Peter Giesbrecht) and Mary (Tony) Perrino. A celebration of Nicholas' life will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, on Saturday, November 17, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in lieu of flowers can be made directly to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba (Toll free 1-800-378-6699 or www.alzheimer.mb.ca). Nick's Philosophy: Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, scotch in one hand, a bowl of watermelon and twisters in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming Woo-Hoo! What a ride! For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.ca 885-9715

Condolences & Memories (12 entries)

  • I always enjoyed our visits with Uncle Nick which usually occurred at family reunions in the summer. He had a wonderful dimple in his cheek which showed whenever he smiled, which was often. I remember lots of laughing, food and watermelon at these get togethers. Our thoughts and prayers are with Aunt Doreen and our cousins at this difficult time. - Posted by: Dale Friesen (nephew) on: Dec 01, 2012

  • Linda just heard about your Dad. My deepest sympathies. Sounds like he had a wonderful life and slid into the grave just the way he planned it. - Posted by: Cathie Rempel (Friend to Linda) on: Nov 23, 2012

  • My parents (HH PAULS and mother Katie Buhler Morden) were also born in Gregorievka and talked much about it. According to the book "Gregorievka" the Pauls and the Buhlers were neighbors to the Friesen clan. I worked for "Buhler Industries" (owned by my cousin Johnny Buhler) as design engineer. Our Grandfather was the village blacksmith. I was interested in Nicholai's inventions. Wishing your family God's peace John Pauls (My parents passed away in 2005 and 2007) - Posted by: John Pauls (5th Cousin Once removed according to Grandma Database) on: Nov 21, 2012
