ABE FUNK It is with extreme sadness we announce the passing of Abe Funk on November 16, 2012 at the age of 66. He is lovingly survived by his wife Marg (Turner), son Greg (Laura), daughter Kyra (Michael Wrightson) and the loves of his life, granddaughters Hadley Sarah and Shaefer Jean Wrightson and grandson Kael Abraham Funk. He is also survived by brothers Jake (Frances), John (Pat), sister Maria Rempel, and many nieces and nephews. Abe was born to John and Maria Funk and spent his childhood on the family farm in the Niverville area. He spent his young years playing with his best friend and cousin Jack Harder and learning how to farm. He then spread his wings to Ontario only to return back to Manitoba and Neepawa where he met Marg and her family, Jean and Hugh Turner and siblings Karen (Ralph Kulbacki), Neil (Sheila Douglas) and Kathi (Murray Pearson). Abe was predeceased by his parents, sister Neta, brother Dave and his second dad Hugh. In 1968 at the age of 21, Abe found the career path which he would follow for the next 45 years. He started in the real estate business under the watchful eye of Murray Sigmar. He became involved with the Winnipeg Real Estate Board helping to establish the Salesman's Division of the Board and then was the founding member of the WREB Chapter of Toastmasters. He followed further by representing the WREB Salesman's Division at the Canadian Real Estate Association. He was the ultimate professional to his many clients and gained many good friends and associates during his career. South of the Border Condos where he and Marg lived also garnered many good friends over the years. Abe took great pride in the complex and worked hard to enhance the natural beauty of the grounds and buildings. Abe was known to all as their go-to guy to get anything done. He would tackle everything and fixed it all, gave good advice, solved problems, lent an ear, gave good hugs, laughed with us and cried with us. His mother-in-law Jean pegged him by saying he could fix a car engine and then bake a pie all in a few hours. He loved to cook, bake, tell stories, build playhouses, fix toys, give wagon rides, snowmobile, go on boat trips with friends, spend New Years in Minaki, barbecue waffles and have perogy making parties. Abe was the love of Marg's life for 44 years and one week and will continue to be in her heart forever. They had a very strong bond that got them through the ups and downs that 45 years brings. They were kids when they married in 1968 but as they matured so did their love and connection to each other. The births of Greg and Kyra were their greatest achievements to be further blessed by Grandpa's greatest joys, Hadley, Shaefer and Kael. Abe was diagnosed with very rare mesothelioma (asbestos cancer) early in 2010. There were nothing but positive thoughts and attitude from that time forward. Abe handled his disease with dignity and strength and fought valiantly through it all, never ever complaining. The family would like to thank our family doctor, Robyn Olson, Dr. Gary Harding at CancerCare and the professional and compassionate nurses and doctors at Victoria Hospital. A memorial service was held on November 23, 2012 and was preceded by a private interment at Thompson In the Park on McGillivray Blvd. Donations would be gratefully appreciated to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 or a charity of your choice.

  • So very sorry to all the family in losing their dearly loved Husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Abe was really a one of a kind gentleman. He was always pleasant, kind and ready to be helpful in whatever was asked of him. Reading all the comments really point to exactly the kind of person we came to know in a very short interval of our living at South of the Border. Thinking of you his family with sympathy and caring in losing a real gentleman, loving husband, father and grandfather. • We bought our house on Gemini in NK from Abe when we first arrived in Winnipeg 39 years ago. The Ross Realty agent failed to show so we called McKague Sigmar and Abe came in a black Cadillac the size of the Queen Mary with a telephone, (neither of which was common in those days). Didn't see him for decades but he spotted me recently at the Vic. We laughed about old times together. - Posted by: John and Rosalie Shantz (customer and acquaintance) on: Nov 25, 2012
