MARIA KUKUSIK Maria passed away Wednesday, November 21, 2012 in the afternoon at Holy Family Home with her daughter Jane by her side, at the age of 90 years. She was a resident there for four years. She was predeceased by her parents John and Ewa; her sister Katrzyna; her daughter Anna, and her granddaughter Anita. The kids were her life; she had two daughters, Anna (Art) and Jane (Eric); four grandchildren: Barb, Anita (Jeff), Arthur (Monique), and Angel (Marc), and six great- grandchildren. She loved and enjoyed her kids. She was very hands on and always helpful. Maria was born May 19, 1922 in a border town called Zukotyn in Poland / Ukraine. She was the second oldest of four sisters and two brothers. She grew up working on a farm with livestock and worked the fields. She left her home early when the Second World War started and was taken to a labour camp. After the war she worked in a school doing maintenance work in Poland. Then she came to Canada, worked at various jobs sewing, hotel, housekeeping. She was an excellent cook, loved her garden, her puzzling and bingo was her favourite night out, and lastly she played hours of solitaire in front of the TV. Maria was always helpful. She lived in her home until she arrived at Holy Family in November 2008. At Holy Family she enjoyed the programs, parties and loved sitting in the Park. She belonged to Holy Ghost Church and loved singing in the choir. Maria's sense of humour is what the family will remember the most. Her faith in God sustained her throughout her life and brought joy and light in her darkest times. Many thanks and gratitude to the staff at Holy Family Home and their outpouring sympathy. There are too many to name, we had challenges, talks, fun, good times and laughs with Mama. Thank you Irene Goodwin for being the first and last Health Care Aide to help me care for Mama. St. Mary's unit was the best to allow Jane to be a full time daughter on the unit. To all the other staff: Dr. Babick, Sisters, nurses, housekeeping, maintenance, the kitchen staff with special thanks to Rhonda, office people, social workers, reception, auxiliary, and recreation thanks for being so friendly and helpful to Mama and myself. Thank you Maria Kouch for making sure that my Mama got all her spiritual needs met on the day of her passing. I will be forever grateful for that. Thanks Frank Grabowski for our talks in the park, and lastly, a special thanks to Paully and Anne Jarczuk for our very special bond and friendship. Mama enjoyed visiting the Birds and the Bird Lady. Prayers will be said on Tuesday, December 4 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 5 at 12:00 noon at Holy Ghost Roman Catholic Church, 341 Selkirk Avenue. Interment to follow in Holy Ghost Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Maria's memory to the Holy Family Home, 165 Aberdeen Ave., Winnipeg, MB; SMD Wheelchair Services, 1111 Winnipeg Ave., Winnipeg, MB or Holy Ghost Church, 341 Selkirk Ave., Winnipeg, MB. 204-586-8044

Dear Jane, I'm really sorry to hear about your mom passing. I remember the last time I saw her in the dining room she looked really tired, but I never expected this. You are going to be missed very much at Holy Family. I don't think you really know how much everyone enjoyed your warm smile and your company. It seemed like my mom was never happy, but when you would come around no matter how hard she tried not to she would break into a smile. All the residents there really looked to you for help and support. Just know that God takes care of his angels and he knows how much you have devoted of yourself to help others. We all miss you on St. Marys, it's just not the same. Love, Janice and the boys - Posted by: Janice and boys (Friend) on: Dec 01, 2012

You were always so kind and caring to my mom and the residence. It is not going to be the same without you being there at the nursing home. Your presence is always remembered. Thank you Jane, for all the help you gave my mother. Always, Rezie - Posted by: Rezie (Friend) on: Nov 28, 2012
