Condolences & Memories (12 entries)

  • I had the benefit and honor of having Ms Waldie as a teacher for several years in elementary school. Her love of music and enthusiasm towards her students was infectious. I have many fond memories while being part of her choir. She was also personally responsible for one of the greatest acts of kindness that I’ve ever been the recipient of that changed my life forever. During my days in choir, after practice was done, I would toy around on the piano for brief moments working out very small passages of the songs we were learning. Seeing that I had an ear for playing she asked me if I took piano lessons. Coming from a family that couldn’t afford lessons, she began to teach me during recess on her breaks. After doing this for a few weeks, one day she told me she had a surprise for me. She had gotten in touch with a friend of hers that taught piano privately and found a way for me to get my lesson fees sponsored by a local company in the city. In the end, I studied piano for 13 years and gained experiences and grew as a person in ways I never would have been able to had it not been for Ms Waldie. The debt I owe to her for opening those doors for me is immeasurable. May she rest in peace. - Posted by: Michael Janciw (former student) on: Mar 28, 2013

  • I first knew Muriel as the younger sister of Beth, who sang in my mother's choir, The Triphonic Singers in the 1950's. Muriel and I were both involved as music educators in the schools and as church musicians. We served on many music associations over the years and both of us served as President of the Winnipeg Music Festival Board of Directors. She was a genuinely gentle lady with great command of the choral tradition of our city. Her presence will be greatly missed. I shall truly miss my "Mighty Mouse". - Posted by: Morna-June Cecile Morrow (Long time friend and music associate) on: Dec 07, 2012

  • I too am a former student of Miss Waldie's and was also one of the many in the Maple Leaf Centennial Children's choir. I remember Miss Waldie with fondness and am very sorry to hear of her passing. She was always kind, inspiring and you could tell teaching choir to children was such a joy for her. To this day I remember and sing songs she taught us. My boys will ask "Mom, where did you learn that song?" and I always respond with "Miss Waldie!" My heart and thoughts go out to all her family and friends. She was a treasure. - Posted by: Debby Armstrong (Former student) on: Dec 06, 2012

  • Ms Waldie was the music consultant when I began teaching in 1989. I was a new and terrified music teacher. Ms Waldie was understanding, kind, and very supportive. She was truly a lovely lady. - Posted by: Lesley Wallis (Teacher, Winnipeg School Division) on: Dec 06, 2012

  • Muriel was a wonderful, intelligent, lovely woman. We will miss her smiling face at Wanasing Beach. She has probably already connected with our other Beach Angels, and is enjoying the view from those lawn chairs in the sky! Love to you all from our family to yours. - Posted by: Mike WIlson Family (Friends) on: Dec 05, 2012

  • Back in the 70's I was a student at John Dafoe School Elementary School in Winnipeg and Miss Waldie was my choir teacher. She was a wonderful woman and teacher. She had a powerful singing voice and inspired all who she taught. She made me love singing and propelled me into some of my school plays as well as choir competitions. Rest in peace Miss Waldie - Posted by: Tim Mazur (former choir student) on: Dec 05, 2012

  • I am very saddened to hear of Muriel's passing. Her love of music brought so much inspiration to all the students she taught and also to all the music teachers that she worked with as a music consultant. I personally grew in my musical skills as a music teacher with the assistance and support that Muriel gave me. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Sincere sympathy to Muriel's family. • It is with sadness to read of Miss Waldie's passing. Miss Waldie was an inspiration to myself and many others that she taught her love of music. I was one of the many students part of the Maple Leaf Centennial Children's choir. Just recently I heard the words from a song she taught us "let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me". I hope that Miss Waldie's family will find peace and comfort in knowing that she made a major impact on many young children's lives, including my own. She was truly an angel. God bless. - Posted by: Deanna Mulder Rohrer (Student) on: Dec 05, 2012

  • Miss Waldie was a true inspiration! She was my choir director back in elementary school days at River Elm School in Winnipeg. To this day, there are many songs that I remember singing in choir under her direction. She was passionate about music, and a motivating, personable conductor. I have many fond memories of those days. Condolences to her family on her passing. - Posted by: Irene Klotz ((former student, choir member)) on: Dec 05, 2012
