NELLIE (SPARKY) WOWCHUK (nee SYMCHYCH) March 17, 1926 - December 4, 2012 It is with deep sadness the family announces the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Nellie Wowchuk. Nellie was born in Dauphin, Manitoba. She left home to work in Central Patricia, Ontario where she met her husband Walter. They married in 1946 and had many happy years until Walter's passing in 2001. Mom spent most of her life in Fisher Branch, Manitoba, until moving to Winnipeg in 2007. Mom's greatest joy was her family. She looked forward to spending time with all of us. She loved company. She especially loved to cook and bake. When the holidays approached, you could find her in the kitchen preparing her specialties - perogies and perishke (cabbage buns). Her homemade donuts would rival Tim's. In the spring and summer months, she would spend most of her time outdoors tending to her flowers and vegetable garden. The fruits of her labour would be canned and enjoyed in the winter months. Community activities played an important part in our Mom's life. She was very active in the Fisher Branch Women's Institute. She loved golfing at the Fisher Branch Golf Club where her friends witnessed a "hole in One"! Singing with the Song Birds gave her much pleasure. Mom loved to travel. She looked forward to her winter vacations. Mom was very talented. We all have something Mom made for us - knitting being her favourite. Mom loved life and lived it to the fullest. Mom will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Ed (Donna), Dave (Jeanne) and daughter Debbie; grandchildren, Stacey (Marc) Pepin, Lindsay (Kevin), Garret (Melanie), Dylan, Chelsey and great-grandchild Alexander Pepin; her mother-in-law Katherine Wowchuk; sisters, Polly Johnson and Rose (Doug) Smith; sister in-law Elsie (John) Kolbuck; brother-in-law Bill, and her many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to our Aunt Elsie Kolbuck for all she did for mom over the years. Linda Abraham for spending her days with us during this sad time. Thank you for everything you did. We would like to thank all our family and friends who came to visit Mom while she was in the hospital. Being the Social Butterfly that she was, your visits meant so much to her. The family would like to offer thanks for the kind and compassionate care given by the staff at The Women's Centre and Concordia Hospital. A special thank you to Dr. Loticki and Dr. Popowich, CancerCare, Dr. Garcia and Dr. Johnson, Concordia Hospital. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, Suite 5-25 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 2B1, the Fisher Branch Personal Care Home, Fisher Branch, Manitoba R0C 0Z0, or a charity of your choice. Funeral Service will be held Friday, December 7 at 4:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. Cremation has taken place. A family interment will follow at a later date. "Mom, you will continue to live on in the hearts of everyone you have touched. We love you and will miss you." CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 204-586-8044

My brother Jim and I remember Nellie and Walter so fondly. When we were children, we usually went to Fisher Branch once or twice a year to visit. Nellie was my Dad's favourite sister and even though they were many years apart in age (14), he always looked out for her. Our visits to Fisher Branch were always looked forward to, as our aunt and uncle were consummate hosts. They both were always upbeat no matter what the circumstances. She was a lady of many talents. Jim and I remember her wonderful cooking very fondly. We haven't seen each other a great deal in recent years, but every visit will be fondly remembered. Here's hoping you are having a wonderful get together with all your loved ones in heaven and hopefully, you are whipping up a batch of saurkraut buns and perogies to enliven the party. I miss the taste of them still. We send you much love, Kathi, Jim, Gary, Vanessa and Ben. - Posted by: Kathi Wirth (niece) on: Dec 18, 2012

My first experience of unconditional love was with my Baba and Gigi. They were both the most selfless and loving people I knew. I am saddened to know I didn't learn everything I needed her to teach me before Baba left us. I will love her forever, to the moon and back. If I can be anything like her one day, I will be a very lucky girl. You're my heart, don't go too far from me Bob....I still need you :) I love you so so so much - Posted by: Lindsay (Grand daughter) on: Dec 11, 2012

To the Wowchuk family: As a young girl growing up in Fisher Branch I remember Nellie to be a very happy lady. Always smiling and giggling. I don't every recall her being unhappy. She worked for my dad at the Fisher Branch Motor Hotel. My parents and Walter & Nellie were very close neighbours & good friends. My mom missed Nellie terribly when she moved to Winnipeg. She talked about her all the time and all the things they did as neighbours. You have our heartfelt sympathy at the loss of such a very special lady! But she's up there with Walter back in "WOWCHUK'S GARDEN" planting all those potatoes and raspberries they were famous for. Once again they are together as it should be. Keep her memory close to your heart as she will be with you every day. The good lord takes the good ones far too soon! God bless you Nellie. - Posted by: Cindy Anderson (Wallack) & Terry Wallack (Friend & Fisher Branch Neighbour) on: Dec 08, 2012

What a thoughtful, generous lady who always had time to help any one, she gave much to the community, Women's Institute, Song Birds and Community Centre etc. We will remember her laughter, singing and jokes especially when we where on holidays down south, one could always count on Nellie and Walter to start up a song or get out and dance. Memories are treasured forever and we will not forget the happiness you gave to so many and your family. God Bless you. Dear Family am so sorry for your loss. Nellie was a dear friend, always caring and happy. My personal good times with your Mom was curling was a good teacher with lots of laughs. Her favorite expression if you didn't make the "house" was "why be short" and you'll do it next time she always said. Ed, Dave, Debbie and Families: Our sincerest condolences. As a kid, back in the 60's, I remember watching Hockey Night in Canada almost every Wednesday (Toronto and Montreal) at your house. Your parents were so welcoming and it was always a pleasure being there (and her perogies were amazing!). Rest in peace, Mrs. W. - Posted by: Jerry & Donna Kolbuck (Friend) on: Dec 06, 2012

We will always remember & treasure the many memories we have of spending time with Nellie. The sound of her laugh, her smile, her warm hugs, her compassion to others & her passion for life itself. We are sure that she is up in heaven dancing with Walter, having a lovely time & of course Walter is asking, "Am I red Nellie?" Nellie is replying, " Yes, Walter, you are red!" - Posted by: Eileen & Ron Didora (Friend) on: Dec 06, 2012
