SHIRLEY MERLENE SPENCE (BANNISTER)
Date of Passing: Dec 04, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySHIRLEY MERLENE SPENCE (nee BANNISTER) After a brief illness, and with her daughters at her side, Shirley passed away peacefully Tuesday, December 4, 2012. Predeceased by her parents Jack and Mary Bannister and brother Mac, she is survived by her daughters, Cheryl (Kenneth) Nordstrom, Karen (Tom) Neillings and their father Ian Spence; brothers Bill (Marge), Wayne (Bev); sister Betty (Jim) Ferguson, and sister-in-law Vickie (Mac). She will be greatly missed by grandsons John (Marie) and Scott Neillings, Justin Nordstrom, and great-grandchildren Madison and Liam Neillings. Mom was born January 26, 1935 in Manitou, Manitoba and told many tales of the adventures of her childhood. The family moved to Winnipeg, where Shirley completed her education at Kelvin High School. She worked at Eaton's until she met Ian, married and settled down to raise their family. She took great pride in her girls' dancing accomplishments, and had many pictures of them in their costumes and recitals. She later worked for many years at both Regal Bedding and Metro Drugs. After retiring, and not being one to sit around for long, Mom became very active with the John Osborn V.C. ANAF #1, holding positions of Secretary/Treasurer of the Jolly Seniors, Secretary of the Ladies Auxillary and Manager of the unit's Bingo, simultaneously. She worked tirelessly for many years with a fierce loyalty and a belief it was the best unit in the Association. In recent years her spare time was spent on road trips with the Jolly Seniors and also with her travelling companion Annie, to various Casinos in Canada and the U.S. Spring break and summer vacation saw her heading out to South Beach with her girls and grandsons, making marvelous memories and if her luck held out, winning a few hands of Rumoli or Poker in the room, at the end of the night. She loved these trips and so looked forward to them. A Celebration of Life will be held: Sunday, January 27, 2013, 1:00 p.m. at John Osborn ANAF #1, 300-1395 Ellice Avenue. The family want to thank everyone for their calls, visits, thoughts and prayers during Mom's illness. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated. Shirley treated me like one of her own. She always had a big smile, a super friendly hello, a listening ear and a kick in the butt when I needed one. She always knew when Karen and I were up to something, we never could put one over on her. She let me be part of her family and her door was always open to me. My heart goes out to Karen and Cheryl, they meant everything to Shirley. She loved a good time and was always up for going dancing after bowling and on New Years Eve or playing card games like Rumoli. She laughed alot and enjoyed life. I hadn't seen her for a few years and cannot believe I will never see her again. May she rest in peace. Heaven is a much better place with her in it. - Posted by: susan cable (Shirley was my second mom when I was a teenager) on: Dec 08, 2012

I have more than enough memories of Shirley to fill volumes, from the sublime to the ridiculous. There are not many others I have the respect and affection for as her. I feel blessed that I was able to spend the time with her I did before her passing, and although the swiftness at which she left us in numbing, I am so thankful her suffering is over and she is whole and healthy and at peace. She will be greatly missed by so many people. I hope her family take comfort in the love she had for them and get strength from each other at this difficult time. Anything we can do to lessen the load, just give a shout. - Posted by: Heather McCheyne (Long time friend) on: Dec 08, 2012
