MARNI ELLEN KALEF Marni passed away on Monday, December 3, 2012 after a brief illness at the age of 56. She faced her illness with extraordinary strength, courage and acceptance. Marni loved her family deeply. She was a devoted daughter to Penny and Gerald, sister to Susan and Eric and loving aunt to Michaela and Chloe. Marni will be deeply missed by her special friend, Mary-Jo, and a large community of loving friends. Marni was a perpetual student who applied this love of learning to all of her interests throughout her life. She spoke Hebrew, French, Latin, Spanish as well as English. She played a mean jazz, blues and folk guitar and collected vintage electronics. She shared her love of gardening with her father. Marni adored her dogs Chester and Billy. Marni began her career in the arts as a stage manager and sound technician with the Warehouse Theatre. She went on to become one of the first female sound technicians at CBC Radio in the 1990s. On-air hosts say they always knew that Marni had their back . She later excelled as the CBC's archivist and as head music librarian. Marni was creative, organized and passionate and had a razor-sharp wit. She listened to her inner voice and followed her own truth. One friend remarked that Marni carved out a world that satisfied her need for creativity, order, beauty and individuality . The family would like to thank the staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their excellent care and compassion. Donations may be made to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the Winnipeg Folk Festival, the Winnipeg Humane Society or to a charity of your choice. On-line tributes would be welcome at passages.winnipegfreepress.com

It is so hard to believe it has been 10 years. We shared some great times in Winnipeg. So many laughs. A few tears. Many a meal. A lot of amazing music. Kris and I were just remembering when we would all gather at her house in the country. When I look at the photos it is like nothing has changed and yet everything has…as Kris says Marni was ahead of her time and … gone far too soon. We miss her. Marni. She was a wonderful challange of ideas. We were all so young. Of course in highschool most of us were at that navel gazing stage but she looked beyond and questioned-- everything, Marni put forward ideas that Not many considered. Many years post high school we met again. She was a still photographer and I was working as a camera assistant for the NFB. Marni was still the same amazing woman. I think often of her fondly. I lived down the street from Marni growing up. I remember best the many summer evenings a group of us would meet with our bikes to hang out, often ending up at Marni's house. To her family, I am so sorry for your loss. Peace my friend. - Posted by: Karen Hammarstrand (friend from school) on: Jan 04, 2013

I met Marni in 1976 and haven't seen her since then, but we managed to stay in touch periodically, a friendship with a strong basis that seemed to last through all these years. The depth of her critical thought, her intelligence and her humour were an inspiration. I am saddened by this news and I send my deep condolences to her family and friends. - Posted by: Judith A. I was so saddened to hear of Marni's death. I had not seen her in some years, but would hear about her through mutual friends throughout the years. We were in Brownies together, and I still have the autograph book where she simply wrote, "Marni Ellen Kalef." I remember her as sincere, compassionate, sensitive, with a sense of justice, even at the age of 9. My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Enid Barnes () on: Dec 21, 2012

To Susan, Eric and all who loved Marni, I am so truly sorry for your loss. I was not acquainted with Marni but after reading this achingly beautiful characterization, I sincerely wish I had had an opportunity to know her. You will all miss her greatly - I can only send you the fearfully insignificant comfort of my thoughts and prayers. - Posted by: Vickie Mowchun (friend of Susan and Eric Vickar) on: Dec 18, 2012

Sorry to hear about Marni's death. She seemed to enjoy the CBC retiree's lunch get together and I was hoping to see her for many more years. She could be ferocious to work with but if she felt you were giving her the straight goods, and serious about your work, she would go the extra mile. - Posted by: Ronald Robinson (former co-worker) on: Dec 16, 2012

What bitter irony. Right behind you at the symphony, and now right behind you in the list of deaths. My condolences Henry - Posted by: Henry Katz () on: Dec 16, 2012

To Marni's family, and to Mary-Jo, we are saddened by the news of Marni's passing, and we are very sorry for your loss. We shall miss our too-infrequent chats with Marni as she headed out to walk, or returned from walking Chester and Billy.
