Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARGARET MONO MACKLING (nee PERFECT) It is with the deep sorrow that we announce the death of Margaret M. Mackling on Tuesday, December 11, 2012. She was predeceased by her parents Robert and Mary Elizabeth Perfect, her loving husband John and her beloved sister Mary. Her memory will be cherished by her son Len (Dawne) and granddaughter Kelly Dawne (Ryan) Vipond and her great-granddaughter Iya. Also dear to her were her cousins, nieces, nephews and godsons David and Paul Hurl, David Morgan and Mark Sigson and their families. Margaret was born in Pilot Mound, MB in 1923 starting her school years there. The family eventually moved to Winnipeg. She attended Principal Sparling and Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute. Upon graduating from the Winnipeg General Hospital, she continued her nursing education at the University of Manitoba, earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She received her Masters in Public Health (University of Minnesota). While there she made many lifelong friends. Her professional career of 43 years was with the Victorian Order of Nurses as a staff nurse, supervisor and an Executive Director until her retirement in 1989. She often said those were the golden years. She enjoyed going to work each day, meeting and working with many exceptional people. She also enjoyed being an adjunct Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Nursing (University of Manitoba) for 18 years. She taught many nurses of the future' and rejoiced when she learned of their contribution to the profession. Upon retirement Margaret willingly served on the boards of a number of health related organizations. The importance of volunteerism and community were close to her heart. During her lifetime she was recognized for her contribution to her profession and community by receiving the Lady Isabel Aberdeen Award, VON Canada; Honorary Life Membership in the Canadian Public Health Association; Community Service Award, City of Winnipeg; Professional Lifetime Achievement Award in the profession of Nursing, College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba; Judge M. George Award for outstanding service and leadership in health care, Manitoba Health Organization; and the Dr. Gaylord W. Anderson Leadership Award, University of Minnesota. She enjoyed sailing in the Caribbean, visiting special friends in Ireland, shopping trips in Hong Kong, Greece, Israel, France and other parts of the world. She was a long time member of the Assiniboine Golf Club, University Women's Club, Nursing Sister's Association - Winnipeg Unit, and Charleswood United Church. Margaret shared her joie d'vivre with her many valued friends and colleagues who contributed in making her life rich and rewarding. She was grateful for her long and productive life. The family wishes to sincerely thank the Health Sciences Centre High Observation Unit, Grace Hospital Staff (5th floor), and her very special VON family. Margaret's immediate family also wants to thank her many friends for their support especially during her last two weeks of life. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Ave. (across from Brookside Cemetery) with Rev. Michael Wilson officiating. Margaret has asked that, in lieu of flowers or donations, you remember her by taking a special someone to lunch or go for a walk to enjoy the world around you - the flowers, the birds singing or a beautiful sunset. Smile at someone you don't know and say hello'. Let those you love know how much they mean to you and give them lots of hugs. This would make Margaret very happy. Laissez bon temps rouler. Margaret will be with me for many wonderful, fun-filled lunches and beautiful walks on the special island in the Caribbean where I am now living. We wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Margaret Mackling, our esteemed colleague and friend. Marg was an important member of the VON Canada Team for her knowledge, communication skills, warmth and great sense of humour. Margaret Mackling was a nursing leader who made a very signifant contribution to Winnipeg, Manitoba and Canada. We are so shocked and sorry to hear of her death. We will really miss her friendship because we've kept in touch with visits, telephone calls and correspondence. With our love and deepest sympathy, Eleanor and Donna. - Posted by: Eleanor MacDougal and Donna J. Roe (Retired National Directors, VON Canada) on: Feb 13, 2013

MARG LIVED ACROSS THE STREET FROM US. WE HAD WONDERFUL HAPPY HOURS. SHE AND MARY LOVED RASBERRY PIE MADE FROM OUR GARDEN. RAE AND JERRYS SHOULD NAME A BOOTH AFTER HER. I SOLD MY CAR TO MARG IN 2011 AND I NOW HAVE BOUGHT IT BACK. WONDERFUL MEMORIES. ENJOYED LINDA'S TALK AT THE MEMORIAL. L25 DEER LODGE WON'T BE THE SAME WITHOUT HER. - Posted by: ERNIE AND JOAN WILKIE (NEIGHBOURS AND FRIENDS) on: Feb 01, 2013

I first met Margaret when I worked for VON. Marg always expressed confidence in me as a nurse, and included me in her professional world. She opened up many opportunities in my nursing career. She was my Mentor. Marg and John attended our Wedding at the Kenville Hall in 1977, and we remained friends ever after. Marg took an interest in our family, and we enjoyed many visits with Marg and Mary over the years. She will be missed. - Posted by: Betty Ter Horst (Friend) on: Jan 24, 2013

She was a great sister to Mary and never left her side when she was ill during the early part of 2012. Both laldies brought a great deal of pride to the Perfect faimily through their accomplishments. I live in Minneapolis and would drive to Riding Mountain Provincial part during summer months. Such a lovely place. Margaret took over the cookings and everything was special. Many of her friends visited her in the park. I enjoyed talking to her on the phone and will miss our visits. Barb Smith - Posted by: Barbara Perfect Smith Bloomington, Minn. (Second cousin. Many of my favourite times as a kid were spent Christmas Eve at Auntie Marg & Uncle Carl's home on Deer Lodge Place. She always made us nephews and nieces feel so grown up and special. Anyone that I have met over the years who knew her, always mentioned to me what a caring, giving person she was. Love and hugs to Len, Dawne and family. - Posted by: Ross Mackling (nephew) on: Jan 08, 2013

Dear Len, Dawne, Kelly Dawne and family. Charles and I would like to express our sincere condolences to you all. We know that you have had a tough last year. Your mother was such a delightful friend. Who could never forget Christmas dinner in July, always the hottest day of the year and cooked on the wood-burning stove in the cottage. There would also always be a bouquet of wild flowers (relocated from outside the park), sometimes paintbrush, sometimes black-eyed susans or prairie grasses. She was so proud of Kelly Dawne and delighted with Iya. We heard stories of her and John's honeymoon, spent at Clear Lake walking the golf course for two games a day and wondered where they would find the energy for any other fun. We enjoyed getting the brochures for the Deer Lodge foundation and seeing the costumes and get-ups for the photos. All in all, we had many wonderful times with Margaret and Mary and our sister Donna and brother-in-law Glenn, also lake neighbours. We look forward to getting to know Len and Dawne better at the same location. - Posted by: Donna McMillan and Charles Lye (Student of Margaret's (Donna) and neighbours at Clear Lake) on: Jan 06, 2013

When I first met Marg she had invited myself and husband Bert to her house, as we were included in a party for the VON. At first meeting her I was very nervous, but she easily put me at ease. She questioned me concerning my ongoing studying at U of WPG, and encouraged me to continue. Over the years Marg was always interested in how I was doing, and what was happening in the family. (Two daughters became nurses.) Her greater interest, and the person she loved to talk to most, was husband Bert. Over the years, cards became less, but phone calls became more frequent. After Bert died nearly five years ago, she still called asking after myself and the family, and invariably said she so missed Bert and their wonderful talks together. Marg was a lovely person, and she will be sorely missed. - Posted by: Audrey Moseley (Friend) on: Jan 03, 2013

The sudden loss of Margaret has left a huge hole in my life, as it surely has for so many others. I first knew Margaret in the mid-1970's, at the U of Manitoba, where we both taught public health to undergraduate nursing students. Margaret influenced me to go on to graduate school at the University of Minnesota where she had gone for her Masters' degree. Her mentorship literally changed my life and I still teach nursing in the USA. Margaret and I remained friends ever since. In 1989 I drove three U of MN professors (her close friends Delphi Fredlund, Alma Sparrow, and Charlotte (Phflug) Carver) from Minneapolis to Winnipeg to celebrate Margaret's career upon her retirement from the VON. It was a joyous trip to honour Margaret and she saw that we were treated like VIPs. Margaret and I shared a love for beautiful footwear, and her favorite shoes were by the Canadian designer Thomas Wallace. Even the last time I met with her in early November she was carrying her "pretty" shoes so that she could put them on once she was seated. She lamented that she had to resist buying new pumps but could only look at them longingly as she window-shopped. I visited with Marg in May of 2012, at our WGH Nurses' reunion. Margaret was the only nurse to represent her class as any others could no longer travel. I later visited her and Mary at Mary's condo before returning to my home in Wisconsin. I last saw her in November at Rae & Jerry's as we shared a favorite treat of hers with our coffee-coconut cream pie. I had no idea it would be the last time, because she talked of coming to visit me in March. I will be driving from Eau Claire, WI to Winnipeg to attend the Memorial service. I wonder if there are others similarly affected who would like to meet in the Rae & Jerry's Lounge after 4 PM of the 9th, following the memorial service? We could take turns sitting in Margaret's favorite chair and lift a glass to toast her... Cheryl Ann Lapp, Eau Claire, Wisconsin. - Posted by: Cheryl Ann Lapp (Friend ) on: Jan 01, 2013

I was introduced to Margaret some 45 years ago, as I was dating her niece Judith Mackling. From the first day she showed me total respect and made me feel like a special friend. Every time I would visit Wpg. I would make a point of spending some time with Margaret. She was a special LADY and will be missed. Bill Waddell - Posted by: Bill Waddell (Freind) on: Dec 31, 2012

I first met "Mrs. Mackling" as a BN student in the 70's. Although I did not pursue a career in her area of expertise, she always encouraged and supported me in my own journey in the nursing profession. Her winning smile, good humour and grace will always be remembered with fondness. A life well lived! - Posted by: Patrice Yamada () on: Dec 27, 2012

We VON friends from the 60's had just enjoyed a Coffee Party with Margaret where she inspired us to start a book of pictures and stories of the glory days in the VON under her leadership. Of course she was to be our advisor. Now "THE BOOK" will be dedicated in her honour, as a lasting legacy of all the ways Margaret contributed to our lives. We welcome your stories and pictures. Margaret is a dear friend and I treasure the lifetime of joy she brought to my life. She was my mentor as a young nurse with the V.O.N. and our friendship grew from there. Words cannot express how much I appreciated her caring manner and the depth of her friendship. Margaret, I will miss our daily talks. You will never leave my thoughts Love, your friend, Dolores J. The world has lost a truly wonderful woman. We consider ourselves exceptionally fortunate to have had her be a part of our lives. When you look at life and the decisions you have made you realize that there are certain individuals who play an intricate part. We have often found ourselves saying, “What would Aunty Marge do?” The manner in which she lived her life provided a shining beacon to guide one through the trying times. We feel sorrow at losing her presence on this earth but treasure the joy and memories of having known and loved her. Thanks Aunty Marge. We shall strive to live our lives with your example of joy, honour and grace . With love, Mark, Lyn, Blaire and Maren Sigson - Posted by: Mark Sigson (Godson ) on: Dec 22, 2012

I first met M3 through the St. James Assiniboine Senior Centre in 1998. She had bought herself a laptop computer & was looking for someone to help her use it. I was currently teaching an evening course for seniors at the Centre & M3 was given my name. Then over the course of the next 14 years I had the privilege of calling her a close friend. My family & I had visited her & Mary at their cottage at Clear Lake where my daughter was really taken with them both & how at ease & welcome they made us feel. I'll miss our lunches at her "office" at Rae & Jerry's as well as her emails & jokes. I was always impressed at how M3 always wanted to keep up with the latest technology & just 6 weeks ago I accompanied her to the Apple store where she bought herself an iPad. She was a remarkable lady & her laugh & friendship will be missed. RIP M3, it's been wonderful knowing you. - Posted by: Gerry Markovich (Close friend) on: Dec 22, 2012
