Date of Passing: Dec 27, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryERNEST TODASCHUK It is with extremely heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ernest Todaschuk, beloved husband, father and grandfather on Thursday, December 27, 2012 at his home. Ernest is lovingly remembered but sadly missed and now in the loving arms of the Lord after a courageous battle with cancer and other illnesses. He was predeceased by his father, Fred Todosichuk, mother Mary Todosichuk (nee Achtemichuk) and brother John Todoschuk (and Vicki Swerhun). Ernest leaves to celebrate his memory his best friend and beloved wife of 50 years, Sylvia Todaschuk (nee Stadnyk), daughters, Rosemarie (John Truss) and Charlene (Andrij Czerny), grandson, Peter and granddaughter, Tatiana of Montreal. He also leaves behind a legacy of humour, charm, love and hope. Ernest was born on May 8, 1941 in Kamsack, Saskatchewan and was raised in Rhein, Saskatchewan where his parents farmed. When Ernest entered Kamsack Collegiate, his family relocated to the Kamsack area. In 1959, Ernest moved to Winnipeg where he was employed with CN. In his hometown of Kamsack, he married his best friend, Sylvia Stadnyk of Shoal Lake, Manitoba on November 3, 1962. They were blessed with two daughters, Rosemarie and Charlene. Ernest was a loving and devoted, caring and hard-working family man, a cultured man, a man about experiences and creating memories. He devoted his life to supporting his family in all of their numerous activities including his wife's business ventures. He was proud of his daughters' musical endeavours and was their biggest fan at every one of their performances. For 32 years, Ernest worked at the University of Manitoba as an elevator mechanic. He also enjoyed farming with his brother, John, and loved to share his many stories of farming in Saskatchewan with his grandchildren. Upon his retirement, Ernest enjoyed his many road trips across North America and his opportunity to fly overseas to France, Poland and Ukraine where he met his family in Chernivtsi for the very first time. He loved travelling with his family near and far, especially the family trip to Hawaii. He also enjoyed travelling to many festivals as well as participating in and supporting his wife and daughters in many cultural events throughout North America. One of his many highlights was spending time at Grand Beach with his grandchildren during the day followed by many good card games of Hola at night as well as a game of pool whenever the opportunity presented itself. Ernest was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral of Sts. Vladimir and Olga. He was also a member of the Ukrainian National Federation where he enjoyed the friendships made as he volunteered at the weekly fund raising bingo nights at UNF Hall. As a member of the Wellness Institute, a big part of Ernest's exercise routine was his conversations with his friends in the therapeutic pool and steam room. He also adored his family pets. Ernest was a supporter of the University of Manitoba's Campus Police Crime Watch Program. Since the inception of Folklorama, he had been an active volunteer at the Ukraine-Kyiv Pavilion and Winnipeg's Folklorama. He enjoyed being part of the Folklorama Family and supporting many events with his wife. The family is very grateful to Rt. Rev. Msgr. Mitrat Michael Buyachok, Rev. Father Bohdan Lukie, Rev. Father Mostivsky, Father Len Ratushniak, Sister Darleane, Sister Ruth, Sister Carmela Lukey, Sister Hilary Lenyk, and all Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate, Margaret Saray, Joanne Lewandosky, Henry Kuzia, Sam and Margaret Kaban and everyone for their prayers, Divine Liturgies, and prayer services for Ernest. The family extends sincere gratitude to the wonderful doctors, nurses and assistants on the medical staff at St. Boniface Hospital and especially to Dr. Taras R. Babick, Dr. Andrea Babick, Dr. Harvey Lee, Dr. Dana Moffat, Dr. Robert Kroeker, CancerCare Dr. Leylek, Palliative Care Dr. Bruce D. Martin, and all Palliative Care nurses, especially Brenda and Judy. Bouquets of thanks are also extended to all who brightened Ernest's spirit, for their care toward him, and for everyone's numerous acts of kindness during the difficult time: Dr. and Patrusia Babick and Family, Ukrainian National Federation Family, Folklorama Family, Peter and Valerie Kohut, Rt. Rev. Orest and Dobr. Rauliuk and Family, Helen Shwaluke, Susan Russell and Family, Irene Osinchuk, Elsie Liwiski, Vivian and Gerry Babij, Orisia and Jim Skoleski, Jan and Taras Sokolyk, Regina and Rod Kachulak, Lesia and Nelson Szwaluk, Martin and Caroline Pasieczka and Family, Yvonne Hawryliuk, Josyf Mudryj, Chrystyna Hnatiw, Czerny and Clapp Families, Butler Family, Amelia Romeo, Linda Romeo and Todd Bezak, Josephine and Eugene Nykoluk, Ted and Phyllis Shwaluke, Chris, Tanya, Jeff and Lilyana. Ernest was truly grateful for the love and care, generosity and friendship that he was blessed to receive, and his family will be forever grateful for your thoughtfulness in making a difficult time easier! Ernest's life has given us memories too wonderful to forget. He was so giving of praise for everyone. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him. God Grant Ernest rest in a place of light, a place of verdure, and a place of tranquility, from which pain, sorrow and mourning have fled. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Ukrainian Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral of Sts. Vladimir Olga, 115 McGregor St. with Rt. Rev. Msgr. Mitrat Michael Buyachok officiating and the Cathedral Choir singing. Interment will take place at All Saints Cemetery. Cross Bearer will be Peter Kohut. Pallbearers will be Gary Achtemichuk, Ivas Babick, Josyf Mudryj, Nicholai Rauliuk, Chris Shwaluke, Trevor Shwaluke, Lyndon Stadnyk, and Jason Yaskiw. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Ernest Todaschuk may be made for Liturgies at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, to the Renovation Fund at the Cathedral, the Shevchenko Foundation Ukrainian Professional and Business Club of Winnipeg, Inc. designated fund, or the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. Cancer is so limited. It cannot cripple love. It cannot shatter hope. It cannot corrode faith. It cannot destroy peace. It cannot kill friendship. It cannot suppress memories. It cannot silence courage. It cannot invade the soul. It cannot steal eternal life. It cannot conquer the spirit. VICHNAYA PAMYAT KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 204-956-2193

Ernie and I worked together at the Machine Shop at the university. We became best friends and shared many hilarious moments. We could find humour in just about everything and this helped in the drudgery of everyday work. Sylvia, my deepest condolencies to you and the girls. I will always cherish the memories of our time at the U. There will never be another Ernie. - Posted by: Tom Jones (Friend and workmate) on: Sep 03, 2023

Boy oh boy I sure miss seeing your face at the store. You always made me laugh with your turkey talk, and the smell of gravy. It was a pleasure knowing you for that short time, but felt like I've known you a lot longer. I still think about you quite a bit, but when I do it's with a huge smile, because you always made me smile. - Posted by: Yvonne (Silly friend from g and l sales ) on: Sep 02, 2017

Sylvia and Family, Our heartfelt sympathy and as the community mourns the passing of a wondeful man but we know Ernie is resting peacefully. The memories of all the great times you spent together as a family shall live on forever. Thank God that He gave us all the opportunity to have known this wonderful man who made so many lives better. Our one regret is that we didn't visit you folks as often as we could have. Ernie was proud of his Ukrainian heritage and wasn't at all bashful about it. To Sylvia and family, our fondest memory of Mr. Todaschuk is when he saw us in public he would come up to us shake hands and he will ask "how are we doing?" He never ignore us and just walk by us without saying "Hello". He was a pleasant person to talk to and joke around and make us smile. - Posted by: Peter and Jenny Ostryzniuk () on: Jan 05, 2013

Dear Sylvia, Rosemarie, Charlene and extended families, I am very deeply saddened by the passing of Ernie. My memories of him are his infectious laugh that could only make one smile, his hard working never give-up spirit, his shirt off his back generosity, just to name a few of the many good and down to earth honest traits this Man amongst Men possessed.
