MICHAEL HARAPIAK March 12, 1934 - January 1, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Harapiak on January 1, 2013 at the age of 78. Michael will be deeply missed by his loving wife Mary, of 56 years and his children Susan (Dave), Robert (Sharon) and Steven (Corray). Grandchildren Kristina, Amanda, Brett, Tyler, Matthew, Megan, Kassandra and Ethan will sadly miss their Papa, and great-grandchild Ava will miss her Papa G. Michael was predeceased by his parents Harry and Nellie, sister Ann Kamfoly, brothers John and Bill. He is survived by sister Natalia Borozny, brother Nick Harman and sister-in-law Kay, sister-in-law Ethel Harapiak, and many nieces and nephews. Michael grew up on the family farm in Cowan, Manitoba and moved to Winnipeg in 1949. In 1954, he met Mary who became the love of his life. With encouragement from Mary he pursued his dream of teaching. In 1955, he attained his teaching permit and taught at his first school, Patterson School in Reedy Creek. From there he continued his teaching career and taught at Pembroke School in Gladstone, Manitoba. He also taught for 28 years with the Assiniboia School Division. Upon retiring in 1989, he worked at the Scotia Bank Data Centre for four years. Michael was passionate about his family, sports and politics. He was a great carpenter who used his skills to build two family homes and a cherished cottage at Twin Lake Beaches where he loved to have family and friends visit for horseshoes, bocce, bonfires and card games. After 40 years of living in Charleswood, Michael and Mary moved to Gimli and quickly became active members of New Horizons. The last eight years in Gimli were truly his golden years where he enjoyed many activities, family and friends and lived life to the fullest. Illness forced Michael and Mary to leave their hearts and many friends in Gimli. Our family would like to thank the staff at Seven Oaks Hospital in U4, in particular Dr. Finlayson, for all their support and compassion. Memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 8 at 2:00 p.m., at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., www.chapellawn.ca. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Michael to the Manitoba Lung Association.
