MARIANNE EWY On December 30, 2012 at Calvary Place Personal Care Home, Marianne Ewy, our dear Mother and Oma, passed away. She is survived by her daughters Chris Williamson (Garry) and Karin Archibald (Marcel), and grandchildren Kathleen Williamson (Bob), and Jamie Williamson (Larry). Our mother was born in Pommern, East Prussia in 1920. During her early childhood, she, her parents and brother moved to Berlin where she spent her formative years. She met our father John Ewy when she worked in Poland and they married in 1942. In 1945, leaving everything behind, they had to flee to Germany where they spent two years in a refugee camp before emigrating to Canada in 1949. After working at a variety of jobs she was hired as a secretary by the Society for Crippled Children Adults, where she worked for 20 years in the Psychology Department until her retirement. She greatly enjoyed her retirement, which included several trips back to Germany to visit her family and friends and numerous trips to Hawaii and Mexico with her dear friend Else. Mom was a very warm, caring, encouraging and positive person who was a wonderful role model for all of us. We always felt that Mom deserved a honorary degree after typing endless papers to see us through university. Our home was always welcoming to newcomers to Winnipeg, and to our many friends. Mom has a gift for sharing her friendships and bringing new people into her fold. She had an amazing garden in her home on Winnipeg Ave where she resided for 50 years. Her abilities as as seamstress and milliner were both creative and resourceful. She was a wonderful hostess who enjoyed setting a beautiful table, doing creative menus and celebrating various holidays throughout the year with flair. She embraced life enthusiastically, including her first motorcycle ride at the age of 50 and parasailing in Mexico in her 70s. She was loved by all who knew her and she in turn was devoted to her family and many friends, especially Else Dyck and Irmgard Friesen. Mom was a strong woman whose positive attitude inspired others. She lived life as it presented itself with acceptance, grace and courage. She was predeceased by our father John in 1972. Mom spent her last six years being cared by the wonderful staff at 2 North at Calvary Place. We were able to have peace of mind and total confidence that our mother was being very well looked after by the nurses, health care workers, support staff and activities workers. We are especially grateful to Eranio Baldanado, her nurse, who was so caring, knowledgeable, supportive and always pro-active. Thanks also to her other nurses Pauline, Sherry, Marie Ann, and Jeremy. Special thanks are also extended to her caregivers- Maria Liza, Laura, Marissa, Amanda, Christine, Cipi, Adonis and Jessica. They treated her as if she were their own Oma. Thanks also to activities workers Jacqui and Maria as well as Makoto, Ruth, Kim, Lee and Helmut Plett, unit manager. In accordance with Mom's wishes cremation has taken place. There will be no service. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends desire, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg R3T 9Z9 or The Salvation Army 180 Henry St. Winnipeg R3B 0J8.
