ELSIE LILLIAN MONKMAN Peacefully with family by her side, Elsie Monkman passed away on Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at the Selkirk General Hospital at the age of 93. Mom was born on October 24, 1919, in Berens River, MB, and lived there until her marriage to Harry Monkman on January 19, 1941. After living in Matheson Island for approximately one and a half years they settled in Loon Straits, where they raised their family. In 1963, they moved to Victoria Beach then later to the Selkirk area. After Dad's passing, Mom moved to the Lions Center, then to the Betel Home. Mom was predeceased by her husband Harry (2001), her parents Frederick (1943) and Caroline (1963) Disbrowe; 14 brothers and sisters and son-in-law Gord Loutit. She is survived by her six sons, Gerry (Mary), Ernie (Diane), Fred (Marilyn), Willy (Gail), Lorne (Michelle), John (Darlene); her four daughters, Darlene, Diane (Randy), Jackie (Gord) and Laurel; 22 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Gladys Monkman, many loving nieces, nephews and friends. Mom loved to sew and quilt, making our childhood clothing, wedding dresses for many and baby blankets for her grandchildren, to name a few. Mom was so proud of her native heritage. One way of showing this was through the masterpieces of leather and bead work she made over the years. She was a humble, quiet lady, stead fast in her beliefs and everything about her was a mirror of love. Funeral service will be held on Monday, January 7, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. in the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Selkirk, MB, with Ron Hampton officiating. Viewing will be from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Mom will be laid to rest Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. in Loon Straits Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her six sons, honourary pallbearers will be all her grandchildren. Special thanks to the Betel Home nurses and staff and to the doctors and nursing staff at the Selkirk General Hospital for the exceptional care given to our mother. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. We love you Mom Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

  • My tribute to Aunt Elsie can best be summed up in this poem: "I open the door. The gracious lady from afar sweeps in. In her hands are her gifts - the gifts of hours and far-seeing moments, the gift of mornings and evenings, the gift of spring and summer, the gift of autumn and winter. She must have searched the heavens for boons so rare". [Abbie Graham} Having spent my childhood at residential school, and young adult years disconnected from family, I am especially appreciative of the warm welcome extended to me by Aunt Elsie when I first moved to Winnipeg, whose immediate love was showered upon me with tastey meals and weekends in her Victoria Beach home. She showed me her beading and quilting projects, of colours so splendid and sewing so fine. This gracious lady welcomed me into her family, without reservation, at a time in my life when I was first discovering my true identity. She affirmed my sense of belonging. Meegwetch, Auntie. To her family, you are ever blessed to have had her in your lives, and on behalf of myself, John (husband) and Christina (daughter), our deepest sympathies. - Posted by: Astrid [Disbrowe] MacNeill (Niece) on: Jan 08, 2013

  • My mother is Lena McDougall nee Disbrowe (Fred Disbrowe's daughter) and I just want to say I got to meet Elsie first time up north where my grandfather Fred raised his family. She came out to see where her brother lived, his house and the Island he lived. She had a great time there and we all enjoyed meeting her. She always had such a warm smile and was a joy to have met her. Rest in peace. Louise on behalf McDougall family. - Posted by: Louise Branconnier () on: Jan 06, 2013

  • I remember Auntie Elsie always sending fresh cream home for us in Loon Straits and my sister Mae and I staying for lunch at her place cause we lived so far from the school house.I have so many good memories of her and her playing her harpscord in church - Posted by: Mariah Rosanne Grove (niece) on: Jan 05, 2013

  • Words cannot express our heartfelt sorrow at the loss of our dear friend Elsie. She was one the kindest, most thoughtful, and loving people I've ever known. She was extremely creative and gifted. Her leather creations were truly great pieces of art,yet Elsie was so humble about this. I only wish I had a small piece of her knowledge. She was such a TRUE friend( in every sense of the word). We were all blessed to have been a part of her life. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Maria and Morgan Bear(Gerald and Laura) - Posted by: Elsie Monkman (very dear friend) on: Jan 05, 2013
