He was predeceased by his sister Jenny Kunz (John); and brothers Stanley Hayek; and Robert Hayek (Yvonne) George was born on June 20, 1923 in St. Paul, MN. At the age of three, he immigrated to Canada with his family and moved into the Gimli area. He worked several jobs but most prominently at the Gimli airbase for 25 years. George loved being outdoors and had many hobbies that he enjoyed most notably fishing, hunting, bowling and line dancing. He also spent many hours with all types of building projects and tinkering and also loved to make bird houses and feeders. He very much loved being with people. George always went out of his way to strike up a conversation with anyone while fishing and was a very devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He always made time for his children and grandchildren teaching them good moral values and work ethic. He retired while in the Gimli area and moved with his wife Mary in 2001 to be closer to their daughter Georgiana in Edwin just outside of Portage la Prairie. He took up residence at the Lion's Prairie Manor in 2011 where he lived until the time of his passing. The family would like to thank the staff of the Lion's Prairie Manor for the compassion and care they provided George over the last year. A celebration of his life will be held at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church at 1125 Saskatchewan Ave. E in Portage la Prairie, MB on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. The service will be presided over by Rev. Fr. Eric Giddins. If friends so desire, they may make donations in George's name to the Good Shepherd Catholic Church building fund. Interment will take place at a later date.
