Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryISLA FLORENCE AYRE Peacefully on Monday, January 7, 2013, Isla Ayre, age 107, passed away at Extendicare Tuxedo Villa where she had been a resident for the past seven years. Isla will be lovingly remembered by her niece Margaret Fleetwood (Jack) and nephews Michael Ayre (Ona), John Ayre (Mary Ann) and Don Ayre (Jean). Also to mourn her loss are three grandnieces and six grandnephews: Evelyn, Eleanor, Terri, Edward, Brian, Craig, Kevin, Ramon and Anthony. Isla was predeceased by her brothers Roy, Robert, Alan and Logan. She was also predeceased by another niece Barbara Tomlinson (Danny). She has maintained contact with the Tomlinson family throughout the years. Isla was born in Winnipeg and attended Manitoba Teachers' College. She taught Grade 1 at Glenwood School in St. Vital for 43 years before retiring. At the time, there was no kindergarten and there was often as many as 50 students in her classroom. In her words, she taught her students independence and how to take care of themselves and get along with others. In 2011, Glenwood School celebrated its 100 anniversary. Several students with the principal visited and videotaped an interview with her at Tuxedo Villa. The videotaped interview was used to present her recollections as part of the school's 100 anniversary celebration. Isla was a patron of the arts. She was particularly fond of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. She travelled extensively and collected dolls from the many countries from that she visited. In the fall of 2000, she donated her large doll collection to the Manitoba Museum where it was displayed to the public. Family and friends were very important to Isla and she maintained an active handwritten correspondence until the time of her death. She was mentally alert and participated in the recreation program. She enjoyed visits and had a great sense of humour. The family thanks the kind staff of Tuxedo Villa for their care and compassion. The family also thanks the Pastoral Care Team of the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg for their ongoing concern, especially Ann Dorenberg for her weekly visits. Cremation has taken place according to Isla's wishes and a celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, 380 Graham Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 4K2. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 www.nbardal.mb.ca

Miss Ayre taught me and all three of my siblings. She gave us all a solid foundation on which to build our further education. I remember an orderly, respectful atmosphere in her classroom. Thank you, Miss Ayre. - Posted by: Kathleen Prince (nee Escott) (former pupil) on: Jan 14, 2013

The teachings that I received from Miss Ayre must have been the beginning of my Independent Nature. When I met her at the 50th Glenwood Reunion (1961, she remembered me by name. An amazing lady. I remember her with fond memories. Rest In Peace, Miss Ayre - Posted by: Lorna (Grade 1 Student of Miss Ayre -1942/43 Glenwood School) on: Jan 13, 2013

Regret to hear about the passing of my grade 1 teacher for the 2 years I spent in her class. She had the wisdom to fail me as I was not up to par. I did better later on in life, becoming an airline pilot. God bless her. - Posted by: ken escott (1942 student) on: Jan 12, 2013

Aunt Isla: You were always part of our lives ... how we remember your Christmas visits, the birthday cards that never arrived late, and your straight-forward advice and counsel. We were blessed to have you as such a remarkable Aunt. - Posted by: Michael & Ona Ayre (Nephew) on: Jan 12, 2013
