RONALD LESLIE HELLIAR In Fort Frances, ON, on January 1, 2013, in his sleep, Ronald Leslie Helliar slipped away to join his beloved Betty. Mourning his passing are children Robert (Judy), Stephen (Elaine), Elizabeth (Paul) and John (Beth), eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Ron was born in Dorset, England on September 25, 1917, the youngest of 10 children. He joined the Royal Air Force as an apprentice aircraft fitter. One of the highlights of his service in the Second World War was working days on end without sleep to keep the planes in the air during the Battle of Britain in 1940. He married Betty in 1947 and immigrated to Canada the following year, working for his brother until he was able to gain qualification as an automobile mechanic. He purchased a small store and operated it for several years before moving it to Fort Frances and converting it into a house that grew by stages and remained the family home for over 50 years. Dad was a heavy equipment mechanic during construction of sections of the TransCanada Highway during the early 1950s, and then worked for the Ontario Department of Highways for 25 years as a shop foreman and mechanic. He really enjoyed his job with the Highways and always spoke highly of the hard work his fellow employees did to keep the district roads in good shape. Ron had a burning desire for knowledge which he imparted to his family. He was an avid reader. After his retirement, he turned his attention to achieving a life long ambition to continue his education. He started taking courses for interest and eventually completed his BA in history at the age of 75. Dad was passionate about many subjects, especially politics, and never shy about expressing his opinions, as exhibited by his frequent letters to the editor. He loved to share stories of his war experiences and early days in the Rainy River District. Scouts Canada, the Kenora Rainy River NDP (lifetime member award) and the Parks Board were among the organizations that benefited from his volunteerism. His 50 year long marriage was built on mutual respect. Ron and Betty were best friends, did everything together and enjoyed each other's company. Life was difficult for him after she passed away in 1997 but he developed new interests such as woodworking, and cooking. His Christmas puddings and jams were impressive! A memorial service will be held at a later date. If desired, donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society.
