I am seeing this message so late, and am saddened to hear of my former coach’s passing. I was a member of the track team that Mr. Buchanan coached at Courtice High School. I remember early winter days doing practices in the school hallways when it was too cold to go outside. In August, 1970, I watched Mr. Buchanan compete in a 10 mile race at the CNE where Jerome Drayton set a world record. Mr. Buchanan had cut his foot just days before, and was still hurting but he was used to competing in less than ideal conditions. He had won the Canadian 3 mile championship a few years earlier in Winnipeg after hitchhiking for several days from Ontario, arriving just in time for the race. He didn’t do particularly well in the race against Drayton who pretty much lapped the field. But when Drayton was trying to lap him, he managed to keep ahead for 2 more laps—the most Drayton saw of anybody in the whole race. Afterwards, getting post race massages, Mr. Buchanan was chatting with Drayton the whole time and they were laughing that in spite of getting lapped, Mr. Buchanan had pushed him to a world record…just one of many memories of a coach who taught me lifelong lessons about doing your best under all circumstances… - Posted by: Bob Prouty (Student of his at Courtice Hugh School) on: Feb 23, 2022

I remember Bob very fondly from my days on the St. Catharines track team. He was very supportive and very kind and put a lot of himself into the sport and the team. So sorry to read that he died so young. My sincerest condolences to his family. - Posted by: Frank (track team member) on: Dec 08, 2019

Sincere condolences to Bob's family. How wonderful Bob's life became when he met Connie. A sparkle appeared in his eyes whenever he spoke of her, which was often. A kind gentleman, a pleasure to know and work with. - Posted by: Marilyn and Vic Grant (co-worker) on: Jan 23, 2013

Sincere condolences to all the family. I only worked with Mr. Bob Buchanan for a short time, however he was very helpful with a new rookie and was fair. Bob was always up beat and I liked our morning discussions. He was a good and kind man. I miss him even though I have not seen him for a few years. RIP my friend. - Posted by: Kristine Palsson (Co-worker at Royal Lepage ) on: Jan 17, 2013
