Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMILDRED (MINNIE) SHNIER (nee SMITH) Minnie Shnier was born January 6, 1921, to the late Rose and Daniel Smith. She passed away peacefully on January 5, 2013, with her children and her grandchildren by her side. Minnie was predeceased by her sisters, Sarah (Dave) Jacobson, Estelle (Harold) Diamond, and her brothers Art (Selma), Max (Claire), and Harry (Ruthie) Smith. She will be greatly missed by her loving daughter, Rochelle Nozick, and grandchildren Jennifer (Alan) Ritter, Kim Nozick, and Josh Nozick, and her twin great-granddaughters Brianna and Madeline Ritter. She will be lovingly remembered by her identical twin sister, Gertrude Matas, as well as many sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. Minnie was born at home, on Jarvis Avenue. She grew up in Winnipeg's North End, and attended Luxton School and later St. John's High School. She studied Home Economics at the University of Manitoba, and then worked for her father at D. Smith Sons. She married Max Shnier in 1945. Minnie kept a close relationship with the Shnier family throughout her life. Minnie was a gentle and generous soul. She loved the outdoors, her yard, and her garden. She partook in art and sculpture lessons. She was a lifetime member of Hadassah-Wizo Council of Winnipeg, National Council of Jewish Women, and Ort, volunteering at many bazaars and the Opportunity Store. More than anything, Minnie loved her family dearly. She had the greatest pride in being a sister, mother, auntie, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She was always ready to lend a hand in support, to share a treat from her purse, or provide gentle company without being asked. She loved being the elder of the famous Smith twins of Winnipeg, and she was inseparable from her sister Gertie. Her greatest pride in life was her daughter, Rochelle. She always stated, "I only have one kid, but she's a good one". Despite personal hardships and heartaches in her life, she modeled independence, courage, acceptance, and grace to those around her. Minnie was a true lady, inside and out. Minnie lived her later years in Winnipeg's Simkin Centre. Despite her increasing frailty and illness, she never lost her gentle nature and compassionate spirit. She was kind and giving to everyone around her. Through her final days, Minnie found happiness in the company of those dearest to her. Our heartfelt thanks to Minnie's caregivers, Gemma Tiglao, Benilda Santos, and the staff of the Simkin Centre for providing constant support and love to Minnie over the last several years. Funeral services for Minnie were held on January 7, 2013, at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. Pallbearers were her grandchildren and nephews, Josh Nozick, Alan Ritter, Michael Shnier, Daniel Shnier, Joel Remis, and Kenny Goldstein. Should family or friends desire, donations to honour Minnie's life can be directed to the Simkin Centre of Winnipeg.
