ARTHUR WELLBY It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of a great husband, father, and friend on Sunday, January 20, 2013. Arthur Edward Cunningham Wellby died at age 71, peacefully at home, with his family by his side. Arthur will be terribly missed by his beloved wife of 42 years and best friend, Sharon; sons Dylan (Lynn, Jade), Arthur, Brooke (Lee-Ann, Katy-Ann, Addy, Helena); sister Elaine, and Auntie Marj. He was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Kathleen; sister Jacqui, and brother-in-law Rod. On November 11, 1941 Arthur was born in Karachi, Pakistan during partition. He later returned to Battersea, London, England at an early age. At 15 years old Arthur enlisted in the Royal Merchant Marine where he travelled the globe for several years. His working life also took him to several exotic locales including Jamaica, the Bahamas, Miami, finally settling in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Arthur had a huge passion for boxing which began at a young age in England. In 1963, he won the Nationals (ABA's). With pride, he boxed for his beloved country as a welterweight in numerous tournaments and competitions around the world. In 1980, he began his career as a boxing referee and judge with the Manitoba Boxing Commission for 20 years. Moreover, Arthur helped found Crescentwood Boxing Club with friend, Stuart Sutherland. He worked as a cut man, promoter, and trained many of Winnipeg's best boxers. Other interests of Arthur included golf, reading, travel, and watching his beloved Chelsea Football Club every Saturday with his sons. His wicked sense of humour, Cockney slang, one-liners and legendary insults will be sorely missed. As well, his generosity and helpful nature were second to none. In compliance with Arthur's wishes no formal Funeral Service will take place. Instead, a memorial wake will be held in his honour on Sunday, January 27, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Silver Heights Restaurant, 2169 Portage Avenue. Richard Wojcik, Funeral Director of Wojcik's Funeral Chapel Crematorium, is in care of arrangements, 204-897-4665. Every man has their tale of woe, and in my case, there was more woe than tail!
