Born: May 12, 1929
Date of Passing: Jan 15, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHUGH ARTHUR LOWERY May 12, 1929 - January 15, 2013 It is with great sadness we announce Hugh's passing in Oro Valley, Arizona, after a battle with cancer. He lived a long, active and successful life and we, his children and his wife, Doris, celebrate his considerable contributions to business, sports and his beloved family. Hugh was born in Winnipeg to businessman, Art Lowery and mezzo-soprano, Grace Maguire Lowery. He showed an early interest in sports and while still attending Kelvin High School, won several trophies in rowing. Hugh competed in many tennis tournaments and later belonged to the Winnipeg Squash Racquet Club. He loved sailing his Klepper on Lake Winnipeg where the family owned a cottage. A golfer, Hugh was a member of the St. Charles Golf Country Club and while living in Tucson, competed in several international tournaments on their behalf. A lucky golfer too: he counts no fewer than six hole-in-ones in his lifetime! Hugh attended United College before entering the business world to work with his father - a partnership that endured 20 years. From the late 1960s on, it was as owner (with Lou Kliman) of the Standard Knitting Company that Hugh is perhaps best known in Winnipeg. Together, the partners built their brand, 'Tundra Sweaters', into a business employing over 200 people with sales across Canada and abroad. Hugh married Ruth Horton in 1948, and they raised a family of eight children while living first in River Heights and then in East Kildonan. In 1981, Hugh married Doris Heywood and together they continued to build the business and travel extensively. Doris and Hugh established their home first in St. James and later, after Hugh's retirement in 1991, in Oro Valley while spending summers in Winnipeg. Hugh always cared deeply about politics and about justice in the world. He followed world events and read widely - political analyses, classic tomes...and murder mysteries but he never lost his trademark sense of humour, one that recognized the foibles of our very human selves. Hugh is survived by Doris, his wife of 32 years and by his younger sister, Donna (Walter), as well as his children: Chris, Rob, Dave, Katherine, Lynn (David), Del (John), Glenn (Joanne), Marian (Bruce) and Laura, as well as grandchildren: Melanie, Jason, and Michelle, Curtis, Jared and Jessica, Joel, Annie and Aidan, John-Paul (Candace), Shannon (Jason), Joe (Alex) and Meghan, Erica (Stu) and Andrew (Jen) and great-grandchildren: Jackson, Orielle and Wyatt. An opportunity to remember Hugh's life will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. in the meeting room at 190 Osborne St. N. In remembrance of Hugh, the family invites you to consider a contribution to a charity of your choice.
