DONALD GEORGE TACKABERRY Suddenly, on January 21, 2013, after a short illness, and surrounded by loving family, Donald "Tack" made his long journey home. Don is survived by his lifelong partner, mate, and loving wife Shirley through 59 years of marriage, sister Marion of Victoria, BC, children Patrick, Robert (Brenda), and Colleen (Ron), grandchildren Samantha, Kimberly, Karen, and Steven, and numerous nieces, nephews and other relations. He was predeceased by father Edwin, mother Mildred, and brother Allan. Donald was born April 3, 1932 in Brandon MB, where he often hung around his grandfather George's Tacks' boot and skate shop, moved to Winnipeg early in his life, attended Greenwood, Earl Grey, and Kelvin High School, and wedded Shirley on August 8, 1953. Tack had a distinguished career at Manitoba Telephone System, starting in 1952, advancing to foreman of the 4A office on Corydon Ave., and eventually retiring in 1987 to enjoy his family, friends, and hobbies. Dad, Grandpa, Tack, and Don will be remembered for his love of curling with the MTS league, X-C skiing with many friends and family, and travelling the world with Shirley and friends to places such as Great Britain, China, Canada, and the USA. Dad and Mom's home on Greenwich Bay in Windsor Park was and is a place where friends and family gathered to enjoy hospitality, generosity, and a loving environment. He enjoyed his daily Free Press newspaper, cooking and BBQing, Sunday drives around Winnipeg with Shirley, as well as tinkering, renovating, landscaping, and relaxing at home. The Tackaberry family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at St. Boniface hospital emergency, medicine, stepdown, and ICU departments for the compassionate and professional manner in which our patriarch was cared for. We'd also like to thank the many friends and family who contributed to Donald's comfort as the last journey drew near. An informal service for Don will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2013, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Windsor Park Inn, 1034 Elizabeth Rd., Ambassador A Room (downstairs). In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a charity of your choice. LONG MAY YOU RUN

  • Evelyn and I have just learned of Don's passing. We only met Don and Shirley once, yet he left a lasting impression on both of us. They treated us to the very best in hospitality. Don used to make frequent phone calls to our S. Ontario home to update us on the news and just for a general chat. He will be sadly missed.
