CHERYL BILLINKOFF
Date of Passing: Jan 25, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryCHERYL BILLINKOFF It is with great sadness that we announce Cheryl's passing on January 25, 2013, at age 58 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Cheryl will be deeply missed by her devoted husband Martin, her loving children Daniel (Lianne) and Mira (P.J.), her beautiful granddaughter Shyla, her brothers Marv (Sherry) and Len (Liz), and her many nephews and nieces, relatives and friends. Cheryl was predeceased by her parents Kurt and Pearl Terhoch. Cheryl grew up on Rupertsland as part of a large extended family. Many of her cousins and the children of her parents' close friends lived nearby. They played and travelled together throughout her childhood. Cheryl was always the baby of the family and her two older brothers looked after her and protected her. Cheryl loved children and seniors and they loved her in return. She taught early years and special needs students in Seven Oaks School Division. She was a dedicated and creative teacher who believed that learning should be fun. She brought out the best in the children she worked with. Cheryl also enjoyed volunteering with the holocaust survivors seniors group at the Gwen Secter Centre. Cheryl had a large and diverse range of friends. She was always curious about others and supportive and empathetic when people she knew experienced difficulties. She had great common sense and provided wise advice to those who sought it. Cheryl had a big smile and a hearty laugh. She could be bubbly and vivacious when out with people but, in reality, she was a shy and introverted person who liked nothing more than puttering around her house alone or with Martin and her children. Cheryl's happiest times were family times. She loved being a mother and grandmother. Cheryl was very proud of Daniel and Mira and was thankful that they established relationships with wonderful partners and turned into mature and responsible adults who have made great starts in their lives. Martin and Cheryl were deeply in love throughout their 31 and a half years of marriage. They respected and admired each other and enjoyed spending time together. Cheryl often said that, over the long-term, liking someone is even more important than loving them. Cheryl and Martin really really liked each other. Losing Cheryl will leave a hole in Martin's heart and life forever. The past two years were very difficult for Cheryl, but she was brave and strong and worked hard to overcome the odds against her. Cheryl insisted on remaining hopeful throughout her illness and, after each setback, she picked herself up and moved forward. Cheryl's funeral took place on January 28, 2013, at Congregation Etz Chayim synagogue with internment at the Hebrew Sick Benefit Cemetery. Pallbearers were Marshall Terhoch, Andrew Terhoch, Jim Harris, Sasha Terhoch, Ralph Hechter and Jack Raizman. Donations in her memory may be made to Jewish Child and Family Services "Cover our Kids with Care" project or the charity of one's choice.

Auntie Cheryl’s memory is one that can never be forgotten. It is days like today 6 years later, when someone brings up thoughts in English class like “one person you would want to be able to see who you are today” where I miss her like crazy. 6 years later and not a day goes by where I don’t miss her. She had such a big impact on the person I am today, and the person I continue to become. Forever and ever, Auntie Cheryl ❤️ - Posted by: Emma (Niece) on: Nov 05, 2018

I had the privilege of having Mrs. Billinkoff as my teacher while she was at James Nesbitt. I also had the privilege of babysitting for the Billinkoff's during my high school years. Mrs. Billinkoff was a real friend and mentor. Her friendship extended into my later years of school and adulthood. I was blessed to have her touch my life. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this time. - Posted by: Linda Candelaria (Former Student) on: Feb 25, 2013

I only had time with Cheryl a few times when we gathered for family celebrations. I remember laughing heartily with her, engaging in rich conversation about our common work with children who have special needs and really enjoying her company. Each time I thought how lovely it was to have had the time with Cheryl and how unfortunate it was that our families didn't get together more frequently. My heart-felt thoughts are with all her family who will miss her so much. - Posted by: jennifer pearson (sister-in-law of her brother Leonard) on: Feb 12, 2013

I didn't have the privilege of knowing Cheryl very well but every time I met her at family gatherings, I was struck by her vibrancy, her exuberant joy of life and her love of family. I remember her dancing and happily whooping it up in celebration at our niece Sierra's bat mitzvah. Her smile was infectious and it spread warmth through a room. She will be very much missed. - Posted by: John Scully (My sister Liz is Len Terhoch's partner) on: Feb 11, 2013

My heart was very saddened to hear of Cheryl's passing. Cheryl was one very special person with so much passion for life and others and beauty. We often talked of opening a jewellery store together in our retirement. Although this will not happen now,her true gems are the family that she was blessed with. May you her family continue to feel the Blessing she too was to you and be comforted by her legacy of love. - Posted by: Charlotte Livingston (Colleague Teacher in Seven Oaks) on: Feb 10, 2013

Cheryl was a dear and cherished friend from our earliest days of childhood together. I will cherish the most heartfelt memories of the times we spent together and send my heartfelt love to Martin, the children, grandchild and the family. If it wasn't for Cheryl, I would not be married to my dear husband, for it was she who advised me that he was perfect for me, and today 34 years married, her truth still stands. I will miss her unique sense of humor, her blazing smile and tremendous heart. Everyone whose lives she touched has been profoundly and eternally enriched because she was here. Much much love! - Posted by: Marla Berchard (friend) on: Jan 29, 2013

I had the privilege of working with Cheryl when she was the resource teacher at Elwick school and I am so sorry to learn of her passing. Cheryl was a kind and considerate co-worker who usually managed to point out the humourous side of any situation making her a joy to work with. She always showed a special kindness and consideration towards the children she worked with making them feel special. My deepest sympathy to her family who she often talked about in a very proud manner. Valery - Posted by: Valery Czarnecki (Former Collegue/friend at Elwick School) on: Jan 27, 2013
