HENRY WILLIAM MACKIE
Born: Jan 26, 1931
Date of Passing: Jan 24, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHENRY WILLIAM MACKIE With great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Henry Mackie on Thursday, January 24, 2013. Left to cherish him are his son Chris (Karen), granddaughters Keira and Meagan, brother Tom (Beatrice), and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Predeceased are his mother Sarah, father John, sisters Elsie, Jessie, May, and brothers Charles, Edward, James and Robert. Henry was born in the RM of Fisherton on January 16, 1931 as the second youngest of nine siblings. He grew up on the farm while completing eight school grades. Farming was a hard life made harder when his brother Charlie left to serve Canada in the Second World War. His family was very sad when they learned of Charlie's death roughly one month after D-day while serving near Caen, Normandy, France. Dad learned how to fish, trap and hunt in order to help sustain his family. At the age of 14, Dad was so excited when his mother gave him his first new rifle. His life on the farm led to an appreciation for nature's beauty and wildlife conservation. Dad took to baseball and loved to southpaw pitch while playing teams from around the Interlake. Dad worked moving pianos and fridges when he first arrived in the city. Eventually, Dad began working for MTS service repair. It was there he met Jacqueline and they were married in 1968. Dad took night courses to become a Power Engineer and soon moved into a position with the Bank of Montreal tower. 1972 saw the arrival of Christopher. After many years with the Bank, Dad joined the Powerhouse crew at Headingley Jail to work some 21 years before retiring in 1996. In 2000, Dad was proud to see Chris marry Karen and prouder still when he held his granddaughters for the first time in 2005 and 2007. Dad enjoyed his retirement by meeting friends, spoiling his granddaughters and continuing to fish, trap and hunt right through fall 2012. Dad made many friends at work, in his communities and through his extended family. You are welcome to attend his service starting at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg. Viewing is at 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please become a member and/or make a tax-deductible donation to the Manitoba Wildlife Federation, 204-633-5967, mwf.mb.ca For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. Dear Chris, Karen and Girls, It is with great sadness I write this...your dad and Art have been friends going back to their carefree days. They spent many weekends hunting, fishing and trapping...always coming home with a great story to talk about...the phone calls went back and forth two and three times each week, your dad telling Art about babysitting the dogs or the little girls..they would try and solve the worlds problems about the gun laws and they would relate to the latest news they had heard. Your dad has been a great friend to us always lending a helping hand, driving us to appointments..even dog sitting when Art landed in the hospital suddenly.Your dad being the God Father to our oldest son Wayde played a large part in our children's lives when they were younger. Not only will we miss the phone calls, the visits, Art will surely miss reminiscing the past with your dad. Your dad will never be forgotten. You are in our thoughts and prayers and may you find comfort in the many memories you share. - Posted by: Art and Dorice Squires (Friend) on: Feb 01, 2013

We will always cherish the times Henry would walk past the house and stop for a good visit. He knew my grandmother's family back in Mulvihill and spoke of her often. He loved animals, people, and life! A true gentleman and friend, take care Henry. - Posted by: Duane, Joanne and Rebecca (Friend, neighbours) on: Jan 31, 2013

I will always remember your father as a man who was very genuine and friendly to the people he meets and always had a great sense of humor. He loved his dogs and he also loved you very much. I still remember the time when years ago I had called Chris to tell him someone stole the plates off this beater of a truck I drove. Chris told his dad while on the phone what had happened. I heard Henry say "They stole the only thing of any value off that." That's one of my most favorite memories of your father. I still laugh when I think about it to this day. - Posted by: Jason Loewen (Friend of Chris Mackie) on: Jan 31, 2013

Henry has always been such a wonderful, friendly neighbour. Although I don't live 2 doors down anymore, I usually bring my girls 'home' to visit every week. He would almost always be outside, greeting us with a friendly wave, a genuine smile, and a hearty chuckle. Henry, you will be truly missed. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family. - Posted by: Tanis (Produniuk) Toews (neighbour) on: Jan 31, 2013

Henry always seemed to be around when I was growing up. From looking after us when Art and Dorice went out on the town to hunting all types of game up in the Mantagao and Mulvihill areas. I have many memories of Henry. I remember Henry bringing Jackie over to the house, visiting and the laughter. We are very sorry to hear of your loss, Chris. - Posted by: Wayde and Joan Squires (Henry was my Godfather.) on: Jan 31, 2013

Henry was more than a neighbor to us. He was our best friend, hunting buddy, he was like a father fiqure to us and also always enjoyed spending time with our Kyle. Henry, Kyle and Terry went hunting together this last November, Kyle and Henry spent most of their time sitting in the truck talking. While Terry was out looking for the big buck. Henry always was looking out for us an we were for him. He was our neighbor for 21 years approximately and those will be hard shoes to fill. Deepest Sympathy goes out to Chris, Karen and the girls. R.I.P. Henry you will truly be missed. Bev, Terry & Kyle - Posted by: Bev, Terry & Kyle (Neighbor) on: Jan 29, 2013
