Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARILYNE HOWLAND Marilyne Howland, 68, passed away Friday, January 25, 2013 at Luther Home. Marilyne was born January 24, 1945, daughter to Marion (Blaine) Forrey. Marilyne went to a small country school named St. Jean in Haywood, Manitoba. As a young girl she fell in love with horses and even the unruly ones did not change her heart. Marilyne was a Pony Girl at the Assinboia Downs Race Track in her 20s. Marilyne traveled back and forth to the US and Canada to pursue her work with horses. It was on one of those trips that she met Bernie Howland who was a jockey. In 1972 she and Bernie were married and together with her daughter they moved to Texhoma, Oklahoma to pursue Marilyne's training of horses and Bernie's jockeying. 1972, on a beautiful fall day, Marilyne went out to do what she loved most which was to ride her horse and round up cattle. That ride was her last. A fall caused brain injuries and the lack of ability to walk, talk, ride or dance again. Shortly after the accident, with the help of many, Marilyne was moved back to Winnipeg. Marilyne has spent most of the last 41 years residing at Luther Home. Although Marilyne could not speak she managed through the years to make her requests known. Over the years her caregivers strived to understand her and gave her the good care and love she deserved. Those who knew her knew she followed her nose to homemade baked goods; she was gentle, and she had a great love for horses and like a horse, no one could ever say she wasn't spirited! Marilyne is survived by her mother Marion (Blaine) Forrey, daughter Heather (LeMasurier) Quinn and Glenn Sukut, grandson LeCoi Sukut, sister Heather (Swanston) Dafoe and husband Billy Dafoe, and nieces and nephews. Services will be held at the Luther Home, 1081 Andrews St., February 8 at 3:00 p.m. with Hanny Labun officiating. There will be a reception following at the Luther Home.

You were a dear and much loved friend. It broke my heart to see you after the accident and should have visited more and then you were moved and I couldnt find you--years later after St. Amant. We had great times at Assiniboia Downs ponying horses to the gate and working for Art King. We even made the racing form as a feature article. Love you always old friend. - Posted by: Linda Edwards (An old friend called "Sunshine) on: Feb 07, 2013
