DAVID ROBERT JOHN DEMPSTER June 11, 1921 - January 31, 2013 Our much loved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend passed away at Grace Hospital. Predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Mary, two children Marilyn Jean and Phillip, son-in-law Ken, sisters Mae and Bunny, brother Lee, brothers-in-law Bill, George, Jim, Cec, and sister-in-law Corrine. Forever to cherish David's memory, his sister Kay and sister-in-law Violet; his children Dave (Diane), Mel (Janice), Patricia and Mary (George); grandchildren Kelley (Francis), Ken (Joanne), Kim (Sam), Sylvia (Paul), Shari (Bill), Joanne (Mike), and great-grandchildren Stephanie, Scott, Alexander, Matthew, Grant, Ryan, Jennifer, Owen and Marrin. David was born in Gladstone, Manitoba living his formative years in the Corydon area of Winnipeg, swimming in the Red River, becoming King Scout, graduating from Kelvin Technical High School. He joined R.C.A.F. in 1941, becoming an Aero Engine Technician initially working at #8 Repair Depot Winnipeg. David saw wartime service maintaining Typhoon fighter bombers in France through to Germany. After the war he joined the Winnipeg police force, for a year, then realized his true vocation fixing airplanes. He rejoined the R.C.A.F. serving across Canada, in Europe and in the Middle East with the United Nations; however, he always managed to return to his home in Winnipeg. His second career was working for Standard Aero Engine where he continued his aero engine career while graduating from the University of Manitoba, and finally retiring in 1982. David was a consummate family man. 68 years of love and devotion to his wife Mary were inspiring. He also appreciated the wider family including his sisters and brother, nephews and nieces of the Dempster and Taylor families across Winnipeg and in Ontario. The cottage at Falcon Lake where his sister also had one became a natural gathering point for all family members. He had a strong sense of service to community. He was an active member of the #4 Legion and the Mason's Cornerstone Lodge where he was a regular driver of cancer patients. He was a member of the Shrine and Scottish Rite. Music was a large part of David throughout his life. He played bagpipes and the violin, and had been a member of church choirs at every place he served, as well as Sturgeon Creek United Church and the Vasa Lund Choir. He loved to sing and shared his gift of music with everyone. David cared deeply for family and friends and would do anything for you. He loved his family and his personal example of discipline and integrity will be with us forever. We love you Dad. The family would like extend our gratitude to all of those that worked together to enable dad to stay at home in the last few years and especially to Thomas for his willingness to care, for his warmth, and for the genuine friendship he had with dad this past year. Thank you! In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your favourite charity. Condolences & Memories (11 entries)

  • I was sorry to hear of David's passing, which I was unaware of until 2016. The last time I saw David was in 1986. By chance, I met his daughter Mary (as well as George) on a random sales call (2016) in the home heating business. Recognizing the last name "Dempster", I asked if Mary knew a Dave Dempster? She explained he was her father. It was at that moment she mentioned he'd passed away in the last year or so. I have to say that my heart sunk a bit when she told me. I had the pleasure and honor of working with David at Standard Aero in spring of 1985. He was a fine gentleman, very astute & highly knowledgeable in aviation yet humble and willing to share his wisdom or help me out any time. David also covered my back on a few occasions and stood up for me. I just have to say thanks to David for being one of the people who made a difference in my early career, a great mentor. • I was so sorry to hear of your father's passing Mary & Pat. It was always a pleasure going to your parents home and doing hair. Your dad would be singing and smiling while I was doing your mom's hair. Every time I go back to Vasa I always think of the great memories I had with them both. Sorry I can't be there tomorrow but I will be thinking of you two. Take care. - Posted by: Barb Urquhart (Family Hairstylist) on: Feb 07, 2013

  • i am sorry about your loss. I was wondering if David's parents were David and Jean. I remember they had a daughter Pearl who I believe was nicknamed Bunny. if this is the right Dempster then Jean was my grandmother Mary Jane Dunlop' s cousin. There is a relative in County Antrim who is keeping the Knox Family Tree and is looking for information. Again I am sorry for your loss.
