Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDR. HAROLD G. HURST August 26, 1917 - February 2, 2013 Our Dad died peacefully at Sterling House February 2, 2013. He joins his beloved wife Mary, who died unexpectedly four years ago. Mom and Dad were Gordon Bell High School sweethearts. Married in 1942, their love lasted their lifetime. Dad will be lovingly missed by his children: Shirley Render (Doug Clark), Susan Hurst Makridis (Tony Makridis) of Phoenix, AZ, Brian Hurst (Teri Caldwell) and Dr. Lorne Hurst (Dr. Elly Hoogterp Hurst) and grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Kelly Render Lazarenko and husband Darryl (Will and Nate), Matthew Render and wife Andrea Conchatre (Olivia, Ben and Chloe); Takis and wife Vanessa Makridis, Christos Makridis; Lauren and Averie Hurst; Kim and Niels Hurst; and sister Margaret Vernon and brother David Hurst (Calgary); Dad was predeceased by brother Jim Hurst. Dad was born in Winnipeg to Alta (d.1990) and Dr. Reuben Hurst (d.1938). His mother was one of the first nursing graduates of St. Boniface Hospital and his father, a surgeon, was one of the original doctors forming the Medical Arts building. He did his medical school training at St. Boniface Hospital. He then enlisted in the R.C.A.F. (1942) where he served as a medical doctor during the Second World War. For deployment to the South Seas, he was trained in tropical diseases, which prompted his decision after the war to complete two-years post graduate studies in Dermatology at the Mayo Clinic. Upon return to Winnipeg in 1949, he was one of five Dermatologists in western Canada and practised out of the Medical Arts building. He was President of the Canadian Dermatology Association, Associate Professor at the University of Manitoba and head of the section Dermatology at the Health Sciences Centre in the 1970s. He was a gentleman, a good listener who had a quiet wit. Mom and Dad had a wide circle of friends who shared their love of dancing, bridge, curling, badminton, tennis and swimming at Lake of the Woods. Dad loved his food (Mom's cooking was best, but he could make due with beans and ketchup). For years, Thursday nights playing poker at the Manitoba Club was on his agenda. Dad used to enjoy hunting ducks and geese, as well as fishing on the many lakes in Manitoba and Ontario. He loved to see his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and hear about their activities. Even more he liked to be part of their activities, especially at their summer home at Lake of the Woods. In the early years some have fond memories of learning to drive a boat for the first time whereas in his later years he taught other grandchildren how to play bridge. After the death of our Mom, Dad slowly started to go downhill, although he played cards right up to the end. Our family would like to thank the friends who kept in touch with him and the wonderful 24-hour care-givers from Home Instead. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation, please consider the Western Canada Aviation Museum. We will remember our Dad on Monday, February 25, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Andrews River Height's United Church (Oak and Kingsway).

I am a former patient of Dr. Hurst. My brother, sister, and I used to refer to Dr. Hurst as the jelly bean doctor because he always had jelly beans on his desk. - Posted by: Mona (Belanger) Anderson (former patient) on: Dec 10, 2014

We met Dr. Harold Hurst (your father) through my father Dr. Robert Pollock. Our father thought the world of your father. They referred patients to each other for many years. Your father had so much dignity and was so precise in his work. Our condolences to Lorne and Shirley and the rest of your family. Natalie and Ronnie Pollock Ronnie and I were his patients for many many years. We will miss him. He was one of that generation that they don't make anymore. Our Condolences. I credit Dr. Hurst with never ending patience and knowledge in his field of dermatology. Thanks to him and his care, I was able to continue in my chosen field of work even though other doctors told me to quit due to my dermatitis. I remember him fondly. - Posted by: Tammie Dueck (former patient) on: Feb 11, 2013

To all the Hurst Family: Your dad was an amazing fellow. I admired him and loved talking to him when our families got together.
