RUTH OSTROVE Sadly and peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, Ruth passed away on February 5, 2013 after a courageous battle with her second bout of cancer. Ruth was predeceased by her loving husband Sam (2003), her parents Freda and Litman Gelman, her niece Naomi Gelman Weiss and great nephew Joshua Gelman, brothers-in-law Abner Ostrove, Ben Kagan, sisters-in-law Sarah Werbuk, Molly Ostrove and Helen Ostrove. Ruth, having survived the Holocaust, came to Canada as a young teenager with her parents. She embraced her new life with optimism and adventure. She married, had three daughters and established many life-long friends. Family and Yiddishkeit were integral to everything she did from nurturing a Jewish education for the girls, participating in Pioneer Women, keeping a kosher home, to celebrating the holidays. A great story and joke teller, Ruth entertained with her amazing memory and excellent sense of humour. Sam and Ruth enjoyed many happy years together travelling and entertaining, being the ultimate hosts and welcoming, not only their friends and family, but their children's friends. A social person, Ruth loved getting dressed up, going out for dinner, going to the ballet, pop concerts, and watching sports on TV. Ruth valued her friendships, understanding the importance of keeping connected and keeping a confidence. Ruth was also fiercely independent and very private about her health care issues. As her health failed her, Ruth's friends reached out, but she was unable to keep up with them. Yet, right to the end, she knew they were there for her, sending her love and support, and she very much felt and greatly appreciated that. Ruth's memory will be forever implanted in the hearts of those she leaves behind to cherish her spirit: daughters Clarine (Judy), Faye (Mark), and Sharon; grandsons Lyle and Ira Kaye, and Rael and Brad Paul; her brother Irving Gelman, sister-in-law Rochelle, and their children and grandchildren. Also survived by her brother-in-law Moe Ostrove, sister-in-law Rebecca Kagan, nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Dr. G. Harding and Kristie M. of CancerCare and the Community Palliative Care Team (Marilyn K. (HCA), Marianne N. (RN), and Dr. F. Crowe).
