Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWILLIAM (BILL) ALEXANDER MCKENZIE Our much loved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, and friend passed away at Victoria Hospital on February 6, 2013 at the age of 87. Forever to cherish Bill's memory, his sister Isobel, his dear friend and ex-wife Lillian Kidd, his children David (Vida), Donald (Josie), Nancy Andrushko (Larry), Douglas, and Catherine Soloshy (Rod); grandchildren Damian (Marcia), Kristin (Steve), Kelly Ross, Kamal Reddy (Nafessa), Sarah and Kelsey; great-grandchildren Olivia, Cora (Larry), Darian, Alexander, Hailey, Ethan, Abigail, Kaleena and Amelia; and great-great-grandchild Ayries. Bill was predeceased by his wives Ethel (Moe) and Doreen; his parents David and Margaret; his brother Russ; and his sisters Mamie, Irene, and Ellie. He was born in Winnipeg and joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1942 at the age of 17. He trained in Halifax as a torpedo man, working underwater to set explosives and other underwater duties. He also assisted in putting torpedoes together on numerous naval ships that he served on: Chippawa, Cornwallis, Stadacona and Peregrine. After the war, Bill worked at CPR Transport until his retirement. An active member of the Fort Rouge Legion, he won many trophies playing billiards. Bill enjoyed music, loved to dance, and was quite a ladies' man to the end. Bill's eyes would light up when he saw his grandchildren and heard their chatter. There was also a special place in his heart for his dog Ben . Dad, you may no longer be in our daily lives, but you will always be with us in our hearts The family would like to extend our appreciation to the staff at Riverwood Square and the Rosewood for their attention and care to father. A special mention to Bernard, his billiards buddy at Riverwood, for his genuine friendship. The family would also like to thank the paramedics and the hospital staff at Victoria Hospital Emergency for their outstanding and compassionate care. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd., on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with a short reception to follow. I met Bill when I was in my early teens. He became my step father when he married my mother Ethel (Moe). He was around for all my teen years and when I got married he walked me down the aisle. (he was very nervous). He was around for the birth of my children who all called him Grandpa Bill. I appreciate how he loved and cared for my mother when she became ill. I always respected Bill, he was always very kind to me. He never hesitated to slip me a $20 when my mother had given specific instructions not to give me money. I was very fortunate to have known Uncle Bill and traveled with he and Auntie Moe to visit her niece Janet in Toronto. I have fond memories of that time and appreciated the opportunity of that experience. He will be greatly missed, my condolences to the family left to grieve for him. My grandmother was married to Bill and I have many memories spending summers with them on Ashland street as a child. Although we did not remain in contact after Grandma Moe passed on, I am sad to hear of his passing and often think of both of them as I now live in the Riverview area. I recall driving the mini CPR transport toys around on the floor and heading over to the community club across the street. My mother, Evelyn Williams and her friend Norman Hanson spent many Wednedays at the meat draws and Saturdays at the club with Bill and Doreen. On many occasions, my husband and I also joined the group for a beer and always enjoyed chatting and kibitsing with Bill. Our condolences to Bill's family. I am sure he will be missed.
