BETTY NATSIALUK HUGHSON It is with great sadness that we announce Betty Natsialuk Hughson's passing on February 7, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer. She passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Baker Lake, Nunavut. Betty Natsialuk will be deeply missed by her husband Michael, her children Paula (Eric), and Erik (Charlotte), and her grandchildren Magnus, Laura, Nicholas, and Robert. She worked for many years at the Northern Medical Unit at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg as an Inuit Interpreter. She really enjoyed working there helping Inuit patients talk with the doctors, and explaining their treatment plans. Many times she would be called out in the middle of the night, 2:00 or 3:00 o'clock in the morning to help a patient. She thought nothing of jumping in a taxi, and taking off downtown if a patient needed her at that time. When we moved back to Baker Lake, Nunavut she started working for the Pre-Natal Nutrition Project. She also enjoyed that work as she felt the young mothers gained some knowledge of how to cook nutritious meals for their families. She felt she was making a difference, and helping the overall health of the community. Thank you to everyone that prayed for Betty over the last year and a half. She really appreciated your prayers, kind thoughts, and visits. A special thank you to Dr. Whittle and his Health Centre Team, especially Lola, Robyn, Gretchen, and Jennifer. When Betty decided that she wanted to be at home here in Baker Lake for her care, that team provided the support that helped us manage that situation. Thank you all very much. We also want to thank all the doctors and nurses at CancerCare in Winnipeg, along with the staff at the Inuit Centre, and the Greenwood Inn in Winnipeg. Betty's funeral service took place on February 9, 2013 at the Anglican Church in Baker Lake, with interment at the Baker Lake Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, or the Baker Lake Prenatal Nutrition Project, P.O. Box 374, Baker Lake, Nunavut. X0C 0A0.

I never met Betty but was told of her on my visits to family in Fetlar in the early 1990’s. It turns out that the lady who told me, Aileen Hughson nee Robertson, was a cousin to Betty’s husband Michael, as am I. I am very saddened to read of Betty’s passing as I’ve lost my own dear mother, Agnes Barbara Dobson nee Jamieson this year. My thoughts are with far flung family whom I’ve never met but their loss touches me anyway. - Posted by: Steve Dobson (2nd Cousin once removed to Betty's husband Michael) on: Oct 07, 2013

My condolences on the passing of Betty. We had a lot of good times back in the day in Winnipeg. I'm convinced that your Mom has made a huge impact in her work and her memory will carry on with everyone who had a chance to know her. Sincerely, Albert and family. - Posted by: Albert Rondeau Jr. (Family Friend) on: Mar 17, 2013

I was truly honoured to have known Betty. She was a very beautiful and special person. The insight, knowledge and wisdom she shared with me I will always value. She has been in my thoughts and prayers and I know that she was always close to me when I did. Betty always intuitively knew what I was feeling or what was going on in my life. She had a gift of putting others first before her. I know how truly missed she will be for your entire family. I will miss your smile and the love you had for life. - Posted by: Linda Cairns (friend and hairdresser) on: Feb 21, 2013

My first visit to Baker Lake was Christmas 1995 and we were invited to share Christmas dinner at the Hughson home. This was the beginning of a family friendship that continues today. You will be dearly missed Betty. Rest in Peace. - Posted by: Esther Adamson (Family friend) on: Feb 12, 2013

Your Mom was truly a special lady and I feel privileged that she raised her family in the Egerton Rd. neighborhood so her children and my children were able to grow up together. My thoughts are with you Paula, your brother Eric and your father and all of your families and your mother’s grandchildren of whom I had the privilege to meet Robert, Magnus and Laura in person. I am sure when your mother Betty and my mother Johanna aka Oma meet in this better place where they are now will go for a walk and talk about their children. - Posted by: Will Barmeier (friend) on: Feb 12, 2013

I met Betty when she was in Fetlar, the Shetland Islands over the years 2006-2008, when she visited with her husband Mike and she fascinated me with her stories of life. The tragic death of her sister, taken by a Polar bear, and how different her life experiences were from mine. I was fascinated that she was telling me of things that I had only learnt of in my history lessons; of living in Igloos, and chewing the skins, the stories and the songs. An amazing woman who I will never forget, and a privilege to have known. My thoughts are with her family and friends. - Posted by: Naomi Smith (Friend) on: Feb 12, 2013

Our deepest sympathy to you Mike, Paula, Erik and all the family in the loss of your dear wife, mother and grand-mother. Terry used to tell us how ill she was and he was so concerned. We hope as the days pass it will be easier and you can remember all the good times. o - Posted by: June and Dean Arnason (Friends) on: Feb 12, 2013
