I first met Irene in 1989 when she designed and taught the first ever part time Nursing Assistant (later RPN) program at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. As my teacher, who became my long-time friend, Irene was my mentor in both nursing and in life! As nurse instructor, her tenacity when she met with resistance, her honesty and integrity, her advocacy and vision of nursing in the future and her commitment to excellence in teaching and clinical practice was a strong professional role model. In life, her love of nature and family, her simplicity of spirit and humble brilliance made time spent with her stimulating and food for the soul. Irene was an encourager, one who listened with her ears and her heart. Thank you Irene for being the wonderful person who built so many positive things into my life and the lives of many others! I will greatly miss being able to share with you, but you will never be far from me in memory! My heartfelt condolences are extended to Irene’s family who will feel the loss even greater. - Posted by: Lorraine Rollins (former student and friend) on: Jun 05, 2013

We haven't seen Irene for many years but we were saddened to hear of her death. She was always so engaging in conversation and interested in what you were doing. Mike and Amy were so important to her and she spoke of them often when we were chatting. She was also a wonderful hostess at parties and lots of fun. Our sympathies to Mike and Amy and their children. - Posted by: Leslie & Ron Smith (friends in London, Ontario) on: Mar 03, 2013

It was with sadness that I heard the news of Irene's passing, not only was she a friend, a mentor, but a Teacher, someone who I respected very much. A person that gave a no nonsense approach to life and to tell it like it was..no sugar coating, but with encouragement and love. Her kindness and life lessons and her approach to nursing and teaching, I will never forget her. - Posted by: Nancy Macdonald (Mentor and Friend) on: Feb 26, 2013

To Irene's family, I had the privilege of working with Irene on Psychiatry at South St Hospital, London, Ontario. Irene was an excellent nurse-- extremely competent and knowledgeable about psychiatry and other areas of nursing. Irene loved to travel and on occasions (when we had time on a night shift) she would share some of her travel adventures---there were many!!! From Antarctica to Machu Pichu and other countries besides! Irene was an intrepid world traveller! Irene also loved to garden. She would invite us, her work colleagues, to drop in and see her beautiful and creative garden in the summer. In fact I still have some plants from Irene's garden. Irene will be remembered for her stoicism and courage regarding her health over the last few years as well as for her love of life in general. Rest in Peace Irene, Sallie Hammond, London, Ontario - Posted by: Sallie Hammond (R.N. colleague -at Victoria Hospital South St, London,Ont.) on: Feb 25, 2013
