GERALD EDWARD BENNETT March 29, 1935 February 4, 2013 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Gerry Bennett on February 4, 2013 at his residence at the age of 77. He is survived by his wife Margaret; son Robert (Tanya), Vancouver, BC, and two granddaughters, Lucy and Josie. He is also survived by his sister Edith Carson, Winnipeg. He was predeceased by his parents, Bessie and Teddy Bennett. Gerry was born and raised in Winnipeg and attended Tec Voc High School before joining the Canadian Guards, 1st Battalion in l953. He served his country in various parts of Canada, spent two years in Germany and was honourably discharged in England. Gerry met his wife Margaret in Manchester and they were married on August 19, 1958. Gerry was a member of the Manchester, England Fire Brigade for 11 years, and then they moved to Thunder Bay, ON where he was a firefighter. In 1966 another move and this time back to Winnipeg where he worked for Winnipeg Transit as a Bus Driver until his retirement in 1993. Gerry was a proud Canadian and was an active member of many organizations. For the last 58 years he has been a member of the Imperial Vets and Fort Rouge Legions; as well as a 17 year member of the Army Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada, Rockwood Unit 303 and lately Unit 283 where he was also a member of the 55 Over Club. He was active in many sports within the Legion and ANAVETS such as golf, pool and darts. Gerry has been on the Provincial Command of ANAVETS and served as their Sgt. at Arms for 16 years. This position took him to all ANAVET conventions across Canada and to the Winnipeg Convention Centre every year on November 11 as the Parade Marshall. During these years Gerry was also a member of the Masons, Scottish Rite, and the Shriners where he was part of two units, the Comedians and the Pipe Band. He also drove for Cancer Care through the Shrine Club. Gerry was always the Comedian! Special thanks go to many people for helping Margaret during this difficult time, including Alvin and Carol Friesen, Roy Hardie and ANAVETS 283. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at ANAVETS 283, 3584 Portage Avenue at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers or donations, Gerry would ask you to always smile, be good to each other and have a "bubbly" for him. "Those we love don't go away, They walk beside us every day, Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed, and very dear."
