HELEN (BESTVATER) PETERS Peacefully, during the quiet hour before dawn, Helen Peters passed away on February 11, 2013 with her family by her side. Born on April 18, 1924 in the village of Steinfeld, Ukraine, Helen immigrated to Canada with her parents and brother Henry in 1930. They settled in Grunthal, MB where mom lived until she began her teaching career in Woolwich School. She was a gifted teacher who inspired respect from her students. She had a special empathy for students with learning or behavioural difficulties and to the end of her life she spoke fondly of the students she had taught. Helen married Henry Peters in 1949 and together they raised five children, John (Connie), Margaret Gluck (Larry), Catherine Skarbowski (Tom), Jeannie Marion, and Monica Reis (Luis). Mom adored her grandchildren, Eric (Jodi), Heidi, Jeremy (Caroline), Tammy (Dan), Teesia (Jay), Anna, Melissa, Mathew, Rebecca, and Emily; and her great-grandchildren Oliver, William, Joshua, and Xander. Mom is survived by her brothers Henry (Mary), Jac (Mary), John (Shirley); sister-in-law Brigitte (Abe); and sisters-in-law Nettie Krahn, Alvina Peters, and Tina Peters; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Henry in 1994, her infant sister Katherine in 1929, her sister-in-law Helen in 1998, and her brother Abe in 2006. Mom contributed so much to the community of Morris - she was a founding member of the Morris Lioness Club, an enthusiastic supporter of the Manitoba Stampede and Exhibition since its inception, an active member of the Morris United Church, a member of the Valley Agricultural Society, and a member of the Morris Art Club. She was a gifted artist, writer, gardener, chef, and seamstress. Mom was intelligent, perceptive, and witty, and possessed an iron will. She was the pillar of our family. The family thanks the staff at Morris Hospital, the Red River Valley Lodge, and Dr. Michael Fraser for their constant care and compassion. Donations in Mom's memory may be made to the Red River Valley Health District Foundation or to the Morris United Church Memorial Fund. The interment service at the Morris Cemetery will be held on Friday, February 15 at 10:00 a.m. followed by a memorial celebration at 11:00 a.m. at the Morris United Church. There will be viewing at Morris Funeral Home today (Thursday) from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Morris Funeral Home 204-746-2451 Toll Free 1-866-746-2451 www.morrisfuneralhome.ca

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Helen was special. Her decency, aspiring to improve herself and her Gemeinschaft were exemplary. Above all,Helen was a suvivor and a model to all. She was my student at university for a spell and she did well, very well indeed. She was kind, compassionate and unspoilt by life or hardship. She will be missed by all who knew her and loved by all the rest. - Posted by: Jack Thiessen (life-long friend) on: Feb 16, 2013

  • In 1960 your mother wrote a reference for my application into Nursing School. Her words were inspiring and something to strive for. I remember the joy of friendship she shared with my mother, Frieda Wiebe. I believe Helen was my first role model, a smart and self confident professional woman. - Posted by: Rosemarie (Wiebe) Norris (Frieda Wiebe's daughter) on: Feb 14, 2013

  • My mother, Frieda Wiebe and Helen were life long friends. I have many childhood memories of family visits back and forth. My mom and Helen would visit together for hours. During a flood back in the 1960's our family had to leave Morris and Helen and Henry were kind enough to take us in for the duration of the flood. I will always remember Helen as a woman who was strong willed, forthright and honest and as someone who was always genuinely interested in others. - Posted by: Jack Wiebe (Family Friend) on: Feb 14, 2013
