DAVID ERNEST GRENVILLE BATES June 20, 1954 - February 12, 2013 David was born in Brandon, Manitoba and graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 1978. He worked in private practice in Brandon until 1990 and, for the last 20 years, with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. David brought joy and laughter to so many people including family, friends and his colleagues at the CFIA. His pranks were legendary. David loved sailing and sunsets at Clearwater Bay and Gabriola Island. Who would have thought that a prairie farm boy would end up being so passionate about canoeing and being on the water! His love for life was contagious. David was truly a teddy bear on the inside and could pull everyone in with his warmth and bear hugs. We will miss your stories, humour, and love of flowers and nature. You were our sunshine and you made us happy when skies were grey. You knew how much your family and friends loved you. We will never let the memory of your sunshine fade away. David is survived by his wife Lynn, daughters Jennifer (Brent) and Catherine (Daniel), grandson Colton, father Grenville, sisters Diane (Richard) and Alys-Lynne (Steve). A memorial service will be held Friday, February 15, 2013, 2:00 p.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home and Cemetery, Highway #1 East and Navin Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. Special thanks to staff of CancerCare (Victoria Hospital) and the Riverview Health Centre, Palliative Care Unit 3E. GREEN ACRES Funeral Home and Cemetery (204) 222-3241 Condolences may be sent to www.greenacresfuneralhome.com

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • Lynn, and family my sincere condolences. I've known David now for over 10 plus years, of working on his vehicles, what a great customer he was, always had time to chat when picking up his car. Even back in the day he got the attention of my young daughters. I'll never forget my youngest at 4 yrs old asking David why are you wearing socks in your sandles. And David just chuckled at her. Rest easy my friend you were one of the best !!! - Posted by: Sean Procewiat () on: Feb 27, 2013

  • Lynn, I was sorry to hear today that David had died. Wishing you sunnier days ahead. - Posted by: Nancy Gates (Lynn's ringette friend of yore) on: Feb 24, 2013

  • To my friend, neighbour, and fishing buddy. Life at the cabin will never be the same. Cold ones on the dock, frying turkeys, or just a helping hand, you will be missed. Luv ya man. - Posted by: Robert Haberland () on: Feb 15, 2013

  • I worked with David and Lynn at FP&I/CFIA. I was shocked to hear the news this week. I remember his jolly nature and how devoted the family was with each other. I pray their many memories will outlast the loss. - Posted by: Sherri (Coworker) on: Feb 15, 2013

  • I met David and Lynn in Brandon during the late 70s when we were all young and active, enjoying expeditions with the Westman Wildernness Club and making plans for the future. Our children are the same ages and we shared the ups and downs of pregnancy and parenting including teaching kids to XC ski and paddle a canoe. We shared many happy, family times. I celebrate David's robust life and am shaken to the soles of my hiking boots by his sudden passing. Sending hugs Lynn. - Posted by: Lynne Foley (old friend from Brandon days) on: Feb 15, 2013

  • Have missed him at our Saturday curling. When I started 10 years ago the first thing that struck me was "who is this guy always saying 'yes please'". Other skips would yell 'hurry' or 'hurry hard', and here was David with his all too polite 'yes please'. :-) - Posted by: Warren Otto () on: Feb 15, 2013

  • Sending my heartfelt condolences for your loss. - Posted by: A colleague in the CFIA family () on: Feb 14, 2013
