BETTY BARBARA TALLON Betty Tallon died, suddenly, on February 12, 2013 at age 81. She was predeceased by her husband Jack, her sister Joan and granddaughter Marin. She is survived by her sons Greg (Jackie Lowe) and Derek (Sherrie Johnston), by her daughter Janyce Creery (Tom), and by her grandchildren John, Kaley, Brittany, Mark and Scott and by her great- granddaughter Madison. She was also very close to her only niece, Karyn Bradley. Betty was born in Cochrane, Ontario to Dalton and Gertrude MacGregor. She was a precocious child who skipped two grades. After attending normal school she began her teaching career in a one room school in Hunta, Ontario, at age 17. That required the resourcefulness and resolve she would demonstrate for the rest of her life. In Cochrane Betty continued to teach while raising her family. She was one of a small group of working mothers at that time. She was an active curler and golfer during that time, often vying with her mother for championship honours. Jack's involvement with Husky Oil first led to a move from Cochrane to Winnipeg, then to Calgary and, finally, to St. Catharines. Betty enjoyed her stays in these communities, making many friends at each stop, through golf and other activities. Although Betty had stopped curling by that time, she remained an avid fan of the game and was always ready to offer an opinion about her likes and dislikes of the personalities involved. When Jack died in 1999 Betty moved back to Winnipeg to be closer to family. During her time here she made many new friends, particularly through playing bridge. These friends were a source of great fun, support and comfort to Betty. Betty's greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great- grandmother who provided her family with constant love, support and guidance. We are all grateful for this and for our time with her. At Betty's request there will be no funeral or other service marking her passing. Flowers are gratefully declined and, if you are so inclined, a donation to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • I worked with Betty's husband Jack for over 20 years and got to know the family quite well. I always remember Betty as very friendly and personable but could keep Jack and the boys in line when they misbehaved. She always took an interest in what was going on in your life and offered good advice. She always had a smile on her face. She was liked by all those who knew her. - Posted by: Grant MacIntosh (Friend) on: Feb 21, 2013

  • I only knew Betty at the bridge or lunch table at the UWC. When I had a lumpectomy followed by radiation I found she had also had that experience but had to drive herself to Toronto from Cochrane while I was receiving the full support of daughters during my treatment. I recall thinking what a brave feisty woman she was. - Posted by: Muriel Smith (bridge friend at University Women's Club of Winnipeg) on: Feb 14, 2013

  • Mrs. Tallon was my favourite female teacher. I thought she was so pretty, smart and energetic. My Mother was a working mother too, so I suppose that was another reason I admired her. I wish I had known she was back in Winnipeg, I would have looked her up. My sympathy goes out to her family. I'm sure her passing has left a hole in your heart. - Posted by: Shannon Miller(Markham) (Mrs Tallon was my Grade 2 teacher in Cochrane,On.) on: Feb 14, 2013
