PHILIP JOSEPH CONROY Philip Joseph Conroy, born February 16, 1954 in Ottawa, ON, passed away peacefully with his family and friends at his side after a brief struggle with illness, in Gimli, MB, just shy of his 59th birthday. Phil came to Winnipeg in the 1970s to work with Revenue Canada, started his family with Tricia Speed, and then finished his career with Transport Canada. His kind heart and sharp wit touched many lives, and will be sorely missed and remembered with love by all. His spirit will live on through his daughter Jocelyn, his sons Kurt (Jackie) and Max (Andrea), his brother Rick (Mari), beloved relatives and many good friends. Thanks to the Interlake Palliative Care staff; his Doctor Michèle Matter; and his cousins Sheila, Mel and their families, who provided a safe and loving home for Phil in his final days. A celebration of Phil's life will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2013, with details to follow. A donation in Phil's name may be made to the Interlake Palliative Care Program in Gimli, MB. 204-586-8044

My heart goes out to Phil's family and friends. Phil was a great guy. I worked with Phil at Revenue Canada in Ottawa in the mid-70s. We both won competitions to work at the new Revenue Canada offices in Winnipeg where we worked with Trish. Phil stayed on while I returned to Ottawa. One day while I was on a visit, Phil & Trish took me for a drive. Someone cut Phil off, so he immediately rolled down the window and shouted out the word, "Obscenities!" That was Phil. Funny and kind. Brad - Posted by: Brad Howard (former co-worker) on: May 01, 2013

I'll never forget my sweet cousin Buzzy Conroy. I'll cherish the fun times we had together over the past years, in Ottawa, Winnipeg and Gimli. We've lost an important member of the Drouin-Conroy family. He unselfishly looked after our Aunt Mony with love and patience for as long as I can remember. Until we meet again, dear cousin. Phil was a very unique individual, someone who could always make you laugh. All we can say is good-bye Phil. We are out of the country and will not be able to attend March 23. However we will get together with Karen Exner to have a toast to Phil's life and do some reminiscing. Having known Phil for over 40 years, we have had many hilarious moments together. As mentioned by others, Phil had a sense of humour like none other. Some of my fondest memories are our trip to Italy, the World Juniors in Vancouver, and many Christmas seasons watching the World Juniors. Phil, I will miss you always and look forward to many pints in the sky. Rest well my friend....... - Posted by: Jim Ferris (Brother-in-Law) on: Feb 19, 2013

Many years ago, you agreed to give the "Toast To The Bride" at my wedding! I enjoyed your sense of humor then and your words of wisdom, and over the years that I have known you, I've enjoyed them more and more. I am richer for knowing you, and I will miss you. - Posted by: Lavina Harding (Friend) on: Feb 19, 2013

I really only got to know my cousin Phil over the past 10 years or so, but I quickly realized what kind of man he was and what I had missed out on because I did not spend enough time with him before that! I would travel into Winnipeg every month or so and he and I would take our Aunt Mony out for dinner, where we would have a wonderful time telling family stories and laughing about the antics of the Drouin girls - Phil's, Mom Nora, my Mom Betty and our Aunt Monica. - Posted by: Mike Cosgrove (Cousin) on: Feb 19, 2013

Although I only worked with Phil briefly he was a positive influence on me early in my career. As an experienced IT professional he was always willing to share knowledge and encourage newbies such as myself. The last time I spoke with Phil was at the then Winnipeg International Airport shortly after 9/11. We chuckled about how he had left IT because airport security was supposed to be less stressful. I was shocked to learn of his passing. Prayers of comfort and healing go out to Phil's family. - Posted by: Alex Avecilla (Former co-worker) on: Feb 18, 2013

Phil .. You made us question, think, smirk, smile and laugh really hard. Not so much in the past few weeks though but we kept thinking and questioning. I will never look at another dragon boat without remembering you at the steering oar and your colourful way of encouraging those of us on the paddles. Airport security and " pat downs" will always bring a smile! While Terry and I will be out of the country on March 23rd, we will raise a pint or two and think, question and smile! God Bless and God Speed Mr. Conroy! Terry and David Murray - Posted by: David Murray (Friend and Transport Canada colleague ) on: Feb 17, 2013

I was so saddened to hear of Phil's passing. I worked with him and Tricia at Rev Can and we spent many off hours in their company. Phil was a fun-loving man with a keen sense of humour and a love of life, sports and his family. May your memories give you comfort. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time. - Posted by: Heather McCheyne (former co-worker and friend) on: Feb 17, 2013

Former Men's and Mixed Baseball, along with former Pool Team Mates and friends gathered on Saturday, February 16th to say our goodbyes to our friend. The most resonate comment by all in attendance was "Phil was the kind of friend and team mate that ALWAYS put others ahead of himself". Having known Phil for over 35 years, I couldn't agree more. As Phil had requested, I will remember the good times we had. And there were a lot of them, from the many years of working together, to the last road trip we took and all that occurred in between. Phil enriched my life immensely throughout the years and I am grateful to have had such a sincere friend who was always there. My fond memories of Phil will last a lifetime! - Posted by: Ken Yuel (Long time friend) on: Feb 16, 2013
